How to practice and make progress

Gus Warden tempWhen the legendary drummer Thomas Lang was in South Africa, he was asked the question “Do you still practice at your level?” His reply resonated with many of the audience members. He said that drumming is his job, and that he thinks about it like a job. He said that he plays live for a few hours a month, but that he still puts in 6 hours on the kit daily. That instead of driving to an office and sitting behind a desk, his job was to practice so that when he played live he would be as good as he could be.

Practice is an important element for any musician, but many have no idea how to practice. Practicing is more than just doing drum covers. It needs to involve focused, goal orientated work.

Syd Rash, ex Arrows drummer and one of Durban’s great session drummers, will be covering all this as well as what is practicing. why is it important to practice and the most important – how to practice correctly. This is a must see workshop even if you’ve been drumming for years. Remember, you’re never so good that you can afford to no longer practice.
