Kronendaal Music Academy’s Instrument Drive

Kronendal Music Academy, is an NPO providing music lessons, musical instruments and opportunities to perform for children who live in abject poverty in the Imizamo Yethu informal settlement and Hangberg community in Hout Bay.

In their 14th year now, KMA continues to welcome all children to discover their musical talent through a choice of 22 different instruments with instruction from some of Cape Town’s finest music teachers. Their concern is for the whole child and the Academy includes safe transport to and from lessons as well as a hearty meal, homework assistance and psycho-social support. Children are encouraged to come every day of the week, for individual lessons, group lessons, ensembles and practice sessions.

Every day, in South Africa, children who do not participate in an after-school activity are exposed to risk, temptation and abuse of all kinds.  Here, in Hout Bay, the mission and their calling is to provide an inspiring and stimulating alternative. A safe place filled with music and fun as well as structure and encouragement where children develop the skills essential to becoming future-fit individuals.

Sharing Music 4 Change Instrument Drive 2020

A collective of like-minded Music Schools in Cape Town, is collaborating with the intention of collecting second hand instruments donations.

They appeal to the public to donate used, but functional, second hand instruments which will be stored at a depot in Hout Bay, sorted and then distributed to the partnering Music Schools.

Paul Bothner Music is the main collection partner, as we have a number of stores around the country. Instruments can be taken to the donor’s closest Paul Bothner store and will be collected on a regular basis.

Fine Music Radio has come on board as a media partner and will be advertising regularly.

The partnering music schools are:

Kronendal Music Academy (https://www.kmahoutbay.org/)

MusicWorks (http://musicworks.org.za/)

Elspeth Jack Music Academy  (https://brucejack.com/headstart-trust/)

Butler Youth Development (https://www.facebook.com/ButlerYouthDevelopment/)

Lockdown in South Africa has resulted in unprecedented trauma for children across the multitude of underprivileged communities in our country. The structures that normally provide routine, psycho-social support, stimulation and positive reinforcement have been removed from their fragile lives: schools and after-school activities that nurture, feed and champion them. Physical, emotional and psychological abuse is rampant now due to the immeasurable stress that families are facing.

Sharing Music For Change is a collective of music NGO’s who focus on providing alternatives to at-risk youth, and offer therapeutic respite from children’s daily fight or flight situations. They have first-hand knowledge of the impact a musical instrument can have on their lives and have committed to gathering as many second hand instruments as possible to distribute to children in need at this time.

Please consider donating your no longer used musical instrument to this cause. All they ask is that it is in good working order as instrument repairs and accessories are exceptionally expensive.
