About Freshlyground

Freshlyground is a South African Afro-fusion band that formed in Cape Town in 2002. The band is made up of musicians from South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique.

Freshlyground’s musical style blends elements of traditional South African music (such as kwela and African folk music), blues, jazz, and features of indie rock.

“We did not have any kind of plan to reach certain milestones, we just wanted to make music together and if that music felt good to us then we wanted to share it with the world.”

This diverse group is fronted by Zolani Mahola as the lead vocals, Pieter Cohen on the drums, Julio Sigauque on the electric guitar, Josh Hawks on the bass guitar, Simon Attwell on the Saxophone, Flute, and Keys, and last but not least, Christian Bakalanga on the electric guitar.
