vryfeesThe Vryfees Festival runs from Monday 13 July to Sat 18 July. Most of the action will take place at the University of the Freestate, however the Festival makes good use of the well established theatre infrastructure in Bloemfontein, so there will be a few shows at different venues like the famous Die Aasvoelklub.

DV Village Music in Bloemfontein will be sponsoring The Rockspiders, who will play a show entitled “Songs by Neil Young”, on July 15 at Die Aasvoelklub.

Vryfees is a non-profit association aimed at the developmet of the Arts The first Volksblad Arts Festival (now Vryfees) was presented in July 2001 as part of Media24’s Arts Initiative.

2001 the festival sold 6000 tickets, and has grown exponentially from there. In 2010 they sold 40 000 tickets, and now they expect an average festival attendance of 160 000 people. Vryfees is one of the largest arts festivals in the country (measured by ticket sales).

The Free Arts Festival is an African language festival that encourages the creative forces between the English and Sesotho cultures. They contribute to the exchange of ideas about art, culture and society through alliances with other national and international creative communities.

Their Mission is to support the development and presentation of excellent art in all forms. They strive to bring people together, support the arts, develop artists and audiences, to drive innovation and to play on the world stage.
