The Crypt Early 2018 Gig Guide

Nestled in the heart of Cape Town is a jazz club that every jazz musician worth his salt will have played. Not only is it a testing ground for young up and comers, but it’s a spot all the veteran return to on a regular basis.

The Crypt in St George’s Cathedral is one of the most famous jazz clubs in the Cape. It is known for two things; the weekly jam session, and booking some of the hottest acts around. And for February, the club delivers on the latter in spades.

  • Thursday 22 March (8 pm to 11 pm) Concerts SA
    Zanele Kambi Quartet
    The charming and very talented vocalist Zaza made it back on the stage. Her warm presence and colourful voice are a treat to anybody’s soul. Back by public demand and band.
  • Friday 23 March (8 pm to 11 pm)
    N2 Jazz Band
    The three founder brothers who between them have played with the likes of Vicky Sampson, Feya Faku and Jimmy Dludlu just to name a few. Noel Wentzel piano, Neugen Wentzel bass, Adrian Wentzel drums, Clinton Stevens guitar and special guest vocals.
  • Saturday 24 March (8 pm to 11 pm)
    Sylvia “Mama Kaap” Mdunyelwa
    Grande Dame of the Western Cape Jazz vocalist Sylvia Mdunyelwa created her own hall of fame with George Werner piano, Stix Mrwebi drums, Norman Saul bass.
  • Tuesday 27 March (8 pm to 11 pm)
    Buitendag quartet
    This adventurous ensemble has never become formulaic. The sterling musicianship of trombone player Murray Buitendag and his brother Kingsley on piano ensures vitality and relevance. Stephen de Souza bass and Luanyani Mzi drums.
  • Wednesday 28 March (8 pm to 11 pm)
    Martin Zenker quartet
    The double bass is in good hands with the German-speaking Martin Zenker who Maneuvers his instrument with a dead-on balance of grit and finesse. Martin is accompanied by Abraham Mennen saxophone leading trumpeter Mandla Mlangeni and Benny Clement on drums.

    Thembelihle Dunjana Trio
    Lihle Dunjana is a young and charismatic pianist and composer straight from the streets of Cape Town. Her music is a combination of jazz, neo-soul and is always reminiscent of her indigenous African culture. Stephen Desouza bass, Tshegofatso Matlou alto sax and Thembelihle Dunjana piano and vocals.
