Looking for that first classical guitar for yourself or your child? With seemingly endless, and totally valid, options for a first guitar, the decision making process can be incredibly daunting.
Today we’re going to have a look at why starting out with a classical guitar can be a great option.
Price - Feel - Shape
When just starting out, you may be hesitant to spend large amounts of money when you’re not convinced you, or your child is going to keep up playing the instrument. With this in mind, the classical guitar is a fantastic option, available at incredibly affordable price-points.
One of the primary characteristics of a classical guitar is the fact that it has nylon strings as opposed to steel strings. These are a lot more forgiving on the hands on beginner players. Nylon strings are physically softer, and are lower in tension, meaning they are far easier to push down and won’t hurt the hands. They are also not prone to snapping the way steel strings are, meaning you have less to worry about when starting out.
Classical guitars have a very flat, wide neck and fingerboard. This lends itself toward the development of good technique and discourages bad habits, specifically when learning chords.
What to Look for in a Beginners Classical Guitar
Action: This is the distance between the strings and the frets. The further this distance, the harder you have to press down. This means that the lower the action, the better.
Size: Classical guitars usually come in three main sizes, 1/2 , 3/4 and 4/4.
1/2: Half size guitars are primarily intended for children between the ages of 5 and 8.
3/4: Three-quarter size guitars are ideal for children ages 8 – 11.
4/4: Full size guitars are optimal for people from 12 years, right through to adults.
