School of Rock Presents The Wall

Recently the School of Rock in Claremont held their first big student showcase at the Barnyard Theatre– a tribute to Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Heidi van der Merwe, the assistant manger of our N1 City Super Store went through and shared her thoughts on the show.

The show was brilliant. By the Thursday before the event the show had already been sold out. The audience was filled with loving parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles and the rest of the extended family. Before I went through I had thought that the show would be a kiddies showcase, but the fact that it was at the Barnyard and that they had chosen to do the wall left me uncertain of what to expect.

I took my seat, the lights dimmed and the students took to the stage. Seeing them in their own unique style of costume I realised it would be anything but a simple kiddies show,

They performed all the classics from another brick in the wall to comfortably numb. Even more impressive was that students who could play multiple instruments were all given the opportunity to showcase their talents on each instrument.

One of the show’s highlights was watching a 10 year boy shredding, but not just using some tricks and tricnkets that so often plague shredders. He was playing with real feel and emotion. He could easily be the next Clapton or Hendrix.

After the recess the older students (18 and over) got the opportunity to play some rock classics from other bands. They played an eclectic range from Journey (Don’t Stop Believing) to The Cranberries (Zombie) and Cold Play (Yellow).

After the music there was a lucky draw where one of the prizes was an electric guitar sponsored by Paul Bothner Music. The winner of the guitar generously donated the guitar to the School of Rock who have said that they will use the guitar as a prize for the student who has shown the most improvement this year.
