Essential Music Theory

Do you want to improve your craft as a musician and/or vocalist? A basic practical understanding and working knowledge of Music Theory is a crucial part of this process.

This free workshop offers you the opportunity to develop this skill, by learning from two of the leading experts, performing musicians and educators.

The workshop will focus on the teaching of basic music theory hacks for all levels – from beginner to intermediary and is aimed at both vocalists and instrumentalists.

During this workshop, you will be taught:

Interpreting Melody
Understanding Harmony
Improvisation
Re-harmonising Songs
Rhythmic development

This workshop is aimed at all musicians who want to improve their essential music theory knowledge.

Amanda Tiffin

Amanda Tiffin belongs to the new crop of musicians who are not only passionate and ambitious about their music, but who go the extra mile to polish their talent. This polishing is done through formal training.

Amanda graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1999 with a Masters Degree in jazz composition and vocal performance. She has gone on to become one of Cape Town’s best-loved vocalist-pianists, and a respected Musical Director/Arranger, orchestrator and composer.

Amanda has performed extensively in South Africa in numerous Jazz venues, Concert Halls and festivals. She has appeared in London, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and tours regularly as a jazz artist in Japan. She has recorded 3 albums, the most recent with her Asia-based jazz trio – the.s.k trio. Amanda performed with her South African trio at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, 2010.

Amanda joined the College Of Music, the University of Cape Town as the Head of Jazz Singing in late 2009.

A versatile artist, Amanda has performed in varying genres: from Musical theatre and stage shows to intimate jazz concerts. She has produced several of her own successful theatre shows, to critical acclaim, is also in demand as a Musical Director, arranger, orchestrator and composer. In 2009, she was Musical Director/Arranger for no less than 5 theatre productions.

Alistair Andrews

Alistair is one of South Africas’s legendary faces. An acclaimed arranger, composer, clinician, solo artist, sideman, educator and just about anything else you can think of, with a career spanning over 40 years. Every musician in Cape Town either knows him or knows of him He comes from a musical family, His late father was the banjo player for the Rio Jazz Revellers.

He studied arranging and orchestration under maestro Merton Barrow and science at the University of the Western Cape.

Alistair started off as a violin player when he was not even going to school yet. He switched to classical guitar where he did his grades formally at school and then went over to Rock guitar after he heard Jimi Hendrix. As a teenager, he performed with a band called The Light. After that, he formed the Fusion Jazz band Amandla and played bass, as he became influenced by Jaco Pastorius. Other famous musicians in that band were Beno De Maar and award wining pianist Paul Hanmer.

He later played the funk band Black Stone and then joined British Rock band Tiger Tiger. Alistair came back from tour and joined star-studied Jazz and Fusion band Workforce in Cape Town.
After that went on playing with Bebop band Moments Notice and spend many years with the Alvin Dyers Trio.

He also sided man with International legends Winston Mankunku, Henry February, Ricard Schilder, Tony Schilder, Efrain Torro, Robbie Jansen, Errol Dyers, Herold Jepfta, Lonal Pillay, Mike Megalimella, Tandi Klaasen, Stompie Manana and Merton Barrow. Alistair had the opportunity to jam with legendary guitarist George Benson.

He released hi first album in 2000 called Your Unconditional Love.

He also set up the computer lab at UCT College of Music, where he was a part-time lecturer in Music Technology for 8 years. Alistair has also been involved with the Paul Bothner Music Group where he is head of education.

Alistair is currently finishing off a new album featuring a brass section from USA and players from Europe and Asia. The other album he is producing and composing songs for will be titled “Psalms Hymns and Spiritual Songs” He is also Leader and Bassist for the international and well acclaimed Wold music and Afro Jazz outfit, Kalahari Connection. Alistair performed at major international Jazz festivals with some of the greatest musicians on the planet. He also gives annual Clinics at Grahamstown Festival and Cape Town International Jazz Festival.
