Biography

Out of the ashes of Cape Town metalcore outfit Dismantling the Architects rose a new dawn. The rhythm trifecta of Josh Gready (drums), Alistair Dring (bass) and Kevin Rule (guitars) formed a new band with the common goal of creating music that was different to everything that was going on in the local music scene. They set about the task of building a repertoire of songs that ebb and flow through the alternative spectrum, and performed their first gig in Cape Town on April 16 2011.

In just 2 short years they played many MANY gigs with bands of all genres, proving that their style included elements that could be enjoyed by anyone. They released an EP and were invited to play the esteemed Metal 4 Africa Winterfest show – one they will forever remember.

In September of 2013, founding bassist Alistair Dring decided to head off into the great wide world, leaving a void in the band they knew would be hard to fill. Then, after just 2 months, the band premiered Alistair’s replacement in the form of uber-bass-beast Mike Cubic (from Moment of Clarity) and another dawn emerged – a dawn that looks out into the sunrise with hope and inspiration.

With Dawn were not to slow down their efforts, however, as with a member change came a ferocious onslaught of new songs which led to the release of their debut album INFINITY in November of 2014. Recorded at 7 String Studios under the mixing hand of Neil Bezuidenhout, the album was a success in the Cape Town scene and caught the eye of the KRANK’D UP organisers who invited the band up to Johannesburg to play at the 2015 festival (with headliners Monuments and 36CrazyFists).

In March 2016, the guys bundled themselves into a cramped van with the lovely dudes from Atlantic South and took themselves on the road for the SOUTHERN INVASION tour. With 4 nights of madness the rambling crew of misfits hit Bloemfontein, Pretoria and two nights in Johannesburg. A truly bonding tour for all involved with memories they will cherish forever.

2017 was another big year for With Dawn. While recording a follow-up EP to their album INFINITY, the boys took to the road again and jammed at the epic METALFEAST at Rumours Rock City. A glorious evening that forged many new friendships. Then, in May, With Dawn released their progressive metal concept EP TETHYS. With one song following a spirit’s journey through water, air and ice to find a soulmate split into 4 parts, the band pushed themselves creatively to produce something they are incredibly proud of.

And then, in late 2018, founding member and general all-round pretty cool guy Josh Gready decided to hang up the sticks and move on up to the green seas of the UK. Replacing Josh was never gong to be easy, but the lads persevered and found their replacement with ex-Sabretooth and Bottom Feeder drummer Damian Rijkers.

2019 started well for the lads with Damian’s baptisim into With Dawn’s live show at METALFEAST-19 in Johannesburg at Rumours Rock City.
