Wind and Reeds: First Time Brass and Woodwind Buyers Guide

Buying your first instrument, or a loved ones first instrument can be a confusing time. To help you out we’ve put together this basic First Time Brass and Woodwind Buyers Guide.

Your Instrument of Choice

Whether brass or woodwind, there exists a multitude of instrument options; saxophone, trumpet, trombone, clarinet and more.

And these larger categories are divided into smaller, more specific instruments classifications. Soprano sax, Tenor sax, Alto sax; these are all different instruments.

The first step is to decide exactly which instrument you’d like to play.

A few Google searches on your favourite music or musician is sure to return some results on the specific instruments used, and set you on the right path!

Things To Look Out For

Too Good to Be True -Take a look around, and find out what the average price of the instrument is (or ask a salesperson). If you come across a deal that seems to good to be true, it may just  that!

Build Quality – Look out for flaws in the general build of the instrument, blemishes in the finish etc.

Choosing Your Brand

When purchasing an instrument as a beginner with little knowledge it can be tough to decipher which products are quality and which are not.

Choosing a reputable brand or retailer is always the safest option in this situation. At Bothners pride ourselves on only supplying quality brands you can trust, should you step into one of our stores, or make a purchase from our online store.
