More about the Camp

The term ‘Fingerstyle’ as it is applied to the guitar, covers an immense range of genres and styles. Instead of holding a plectrum and extracting one note at a time or only being able to strum across the strings, a fingerstyle player employs the use of the thumb, index, middle and ring fingers of the strumming hand to extract multiple notes at the same time.

Using a combination of melody, bass, rhythm and even percussion, an excellent fingerstyle player can make it seem like they have the entire band or orchestra at play under their fingers.

Tony Cox has built a career on the back of his particular South African brand of fingerstyle guitar. Influenced largely by his environment and where he grew up on the planet, Tony developed his own unique South African approach to fingerstyle guitar playing after years of studying and performing all the traditional genres of Folk, Classics, Blues, Rock and Jazz.

Built on a solid foundation, Tony’s singular approach to his own music has inspired many an upcoming young guitarist and garnered him three SAMA awards (South African Music Award) for three highly acclaimed albums.

Fingerstyle guitar playing is the subject of Tony’s next Guitar Camp. For one weekend this April, come and camp in the lush surrounds of Sedgefield or book yourself into one of many sumptuous B&B’s around these parts and take in some cutting edge fingerstyle, taught to you by a master of the craft and guaranteed to get you out of that guitar rut you’ve been stuck in. Open to all levels, beginner and advanced will walk away with a new world to explore.
