Can music really help us to develop our minds and can it even heal us? Musicians are often considered to be amongst the highest ranking in intellectual capacity and ability by scientists who study intellectual development.

Whether it’s visuo-spatial coordination, memory, concentration, or improvisation, musicians tend to have to use all of the above to achieve what they do. For classical musicians, memory might be more of an issue, having to recite sometimes vast pieces of music without accessing sheet music. And, their reading skills also have to be up to a high enough standard for their fairly strict rules of performance.

For jazz and metal performers, improvisation, a strong sense of rhythm, memory, and an acquired sense of stylistic conceptualization is very often necessary, too.
