About Cape Town Jazzathon

In 1997, founding members of JCQ Productions – John Esterhuizen, Craig Parks, and Quinton Raaff – produced the first free jazz festival in the Mother City, Cape Town. Many well-known South Africa musicians’ careers were jumpstarted by the Cape Town Jazzathon. The festival has also promoted South African music internationally and has also received an award as a contributor to the Jazz culture in South Africa.

Soon the festival became an annual event up to 13 years before losing sponsorship in 2009. JCQ Productions decided to close its doors after the passing of John Esterhuizen in 2005 and Quinton Raaf in 2013.

Later in 2017 Craig Parks restored the festival after its seven years of silence. Not long after its revival, the festival re-established itself as a popular event welcoming musicians.

The festival aims to:

  • Allow local musicians to showcase their talent
  • Provide an opportunity to disadvantaged musicians
  • Pay tribute to those who helped shape South Africa’s cultural heritage
  • Encourage unity and reconciliation among the nation
  • Advance the growth of tourism in South Africa
