SACM Concert Series 2017

It’s time for UCT to start hosting the SACM Concert Series 2017. 

Members of the public are welcome to attend the weekly lunchtime concerts every Wednesday and Thursday at 13H00 during the academic term. Admission is free, and the concerts fit neatly into 40 minutes.

A UCT Big Band centenary tribute to jazz icon John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie, featuring visiting scholar Dr Gordon Vernick (Georgia State University) on trumpet.

Many well-known works of Dizzy Gillespie will be performed, including priemeres of A Night in Tunisia, Oop Bop Sh’Bam, Things to Come and If You Can See Me Now from Jazz@Lincoln Center, New York.

CAPE TOWN STEELBAND FESTIVAL

The Cape Town Steelband Festival is a joint venture between the Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival and the Steelband Project.

Steelbands from local schools and communities will perform in the Baxter Concert Hall. The Steelband Project (Western Cape) was set up in 1997 by Liz Brouckaert and
David Wickham. The core focus of the project is to provide quality music education to young people, with a particular focus on youth in under-resourced communities and “youth-at-risk”. The project is active in many suburban, township and rural areas. There are currently 16 steelbands being taught by the Steelband Project on a weekly basis, with an average size of 15 members.

The Cape Town Marimba Festival is a joint venture between the Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival and Woodworx Marimbas.

Woodworx Marimbas is a provider of African marimba tuition, as well as professional marimba band performances. The company provides marimba teachers to schools, performs throughout Cape Town and manufactures and repairs African marimbas.

SMOKEY MOUNTAIN BRASS QUINTET
Quintet in residence at Western Carolina University, USA

Since its founding in 1993, the Smokey Mountain Brass Quintet has performed throughout the United States in venues such as Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and internationally with tours of Russia, the United Kingdom, China, Germany, Jamaica, Prague, Hungary, and Romania.

The Quintet performs a wide variety of music ranging from Classical to Jazz, and Patriotic to Pop.

SIMBI

Simbi evokes our connection with the world of nature in a concert drawing on San, Xhosa, Makonde and BaAka vocal-instrumental music and the imagery of San and Mapiko-inspired dances. The UCT Ibuyambo Orchestra’s contingent of musicians and dancers will perform against the backdrop of a sound/light spectacle devised in collaboration by the SACM’s Technology and African Music sections.

With the kind support of the Claude Leo Foundation, the SACM again boasts an early music ensemble of instrumentalists and singers in 2017. The course offers students a first encounter with the historically informed way of performance – taking into account performance practice of the Baroque period. In addition, most of the recital will be played on period instruments. You are invited to get a glimpse of the students’ journey of exploration in this first Workshop Concert of the Colledium Musicum.

This mixed bill explores notions of Black Dance and is purposefully tongue-in-cheek. From Katherine Dunham to reggae, hip hop to mpantsula, the notion of ‘noble savage’ is critigued, and repositioned. The audience is invited to a free, pre-performance talk with the directors which will be held in the theatre foyer from 19H00.

REDISCOVERING JEWISH MUSIC AND THEATRE

Watch out for concerts involved in this international festival initiated by the University of Leeds in England.

The festival offers some fascinating and extremely powerful and moving works, including an evening performance of Prince Bettliegend and a lunchtime concert of jazz-inspired works by Jewish composers Wilhelm Grosz and Wather Wurzburger.

UNDER THE SKIES

What tales did our ancestors tell as they looked up at the Southern skies? Old-world lore is still alive in the home-spun tales of the rural south. Bow songs of these southern cultures will form the basis for a modern retelling of these stories in a contemporary sound-setting. For this concert the UCT Ibuyambo Orchestra will be re-imagining its instrumental palette in arrangements that will combine its pan-African instrumental and vocal forces in new ways.
