Roland SBX-1 Sync Box

As digital technology moves forward, new and better forms of data transmission become the norm. The problem that causes is that older communication standards are not always forward compatible. This means that it becomes very difficult to use older gear simultaneously with modern gear. That is why Roland developed the SBX-1

SBX-1

Simply put, the SXB-1 is a sync box. It can allow for the muli-format syncing of computers and electronic instruments. So, why you ask yourself, do you need it?

Technology moving forward is a great thing that should be celebrated. As an example, more and more instruments have moved away from standard MIDI in favour of USB. USB allows for a more stable transfer of data in a more universally used format. In addition, formats like DIN SYNC have moved from 24 pulses per quarter note to 48 pulses per quarter note.

While data transfer rates and methods may be improving, that doesn’t mean that your old gear is obsolete.

Let’s say that you have an old drum machine that you love. One issue with older drum machines is that they didn’t have a swing option for the beat. By using the onboard timing clock of the SBX-1, you can now add a swing beat to your drum machine. Put another way, you can use the rhythm on the SBX-1 to drive the drum machine; so you use the SBX-1 rhythm and the sounds of the drum machine.

Timing

The SBX-1 converts the incoming signal from an external device to both CV and GATE signals. This means that it offers options far beyond what you would normally expect from a simple sync box. You can use the unit to play analogue or modular synths. You can also output the LFOs that you create with performance information, modulate them, and use them as trigger signals.

One of the most important elements of music is timing. Without timing, everything falls apart. The SBX-1 allows you to take full control of your timing across all your devices. From syncing your digital and analogue devices to your computer or even as a master sync source to control the tempo of all your devices, the SBX-1 does it all.

Who is the SBX-1 For?

The SBX-1 is for anyone who uses multiple digital and analogue devices that need their timing to be tightly controlled. This is especially true if you have a collection of older gear, or gear that makes use of various input and out mechanics.
