About the Recital
The Centre for Japanese Studies at University of Pretoria in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan hosts Composer and Pianist, Motoki Hirai in Cape Town.
Cape Town classical music enthusiasts will get the opportunity to experience a once-off performance by world renowned Japanese composer and pianist Motoki Hirai who will be in town to participate in the Japan Cultural Week program. Praised worldwide for his imagination and sensitivity, Hirai will perform a free lunch time concert, with a captivating program including his own work alongside classical masterpieces and Japanese folk music.
About Motoki Hirai
Acclaimed worldwide for his imagination and sensitivity, Motoki Hirai has appeared in Europe, Africa, Middle East, US, South America and Asia, performing regularly in prestigious venues including Wigmore Hall (London), Royal Concertgebouw (Amsterdam) and Carnegie Hall (New York). Highlights of the current season and beyond include solo recitals in Wiener Konzerthaus (Vienna), Barbican Centre, St Martin-in-the-Fields (London), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam) and Ginza Oji Hall (Tokyo), and concerto performances with orchestras such as Czech Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra as well as concert tours across the glove.
Born in Tokyo into a highly gifted musical family, Motoki came to London in 1996 to study at the Royal Academy of Music, after reading philosophy at Keio University in Japan. Over the years, Motoki Hirai has performed for the promotion of world peace and for people in need worldwide in association with organizations such as Japan Society, Red Cross, Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, Tohoku Earthquake Fukushima Orphans Fund, UNESCO and UNICEF. Since the tsunami devastated Japan in 2011, Motoki has organized over 30 charity concerts across UK, Europe, US as well as the most affected areas in Japan, raising over £80,000. As an artistic emissary of the Japanese government, Motoki has visited numerous countries since 1994.
