More About James Grace

KANNA Award winner for Best Male Artist at the 2010 ABSA KKNK, and more recently KykNET Fiesta winner, James Grace is one of one South Africa’s leading concert artists. In recent years he has appeared with the Cape Philharmonic, the Kwa-Zulu Natal Philharmonic, the Johannesburg Festival, the Johannesburg Philharmonic, the Gauteng Philharmonic and the Free State Symphony Orchestras in concerti by Villa – Lobos, Tirao, Stephenson, Giuliani and Vivaldi. A regular performer at the major arts festivals and concert series, James’s schedule frequently takes him throughout Southern Africa, Europe and the U.A.E.

James performed Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and Arjan Tien to over 6000 people last year at Kirstenbosch Summer Concert Series, where ‘Grace’s fingers danced… as if possessed by a demon’ (Rudolph Mare, whatsonincapetown.com).

James’s latest solo guitar album ‘Chilled’, released under the banner of his independently owned and operated record label, Stringwise Records, recently received a South African Music Award nomination (SAMA). Two of James’s previous releases Sevilla – Music of Spain II and Café Latino both topped the Classic FM Top 20 South African Charts and earned James SAMA nominations for Best Popular Classical Album and Best Instrumental Album respectively.

As an entrepreneur and concert promoter, James often hosts and collaborates with visiting artists, having organized and performed a nationwide tour with Mexican guitarist Morgan Szymanksi earlier this year. James has just returned to Cape Town after a week’s run of his acclaimed show Recuerdos featuring Carli Spanish Dance productions and underwater photography by Ilse Moore at Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre in Johannesburg.

James is head of guitar studies at the University of Cape Town’s College of Music, in addition to running his own private teaching practise.

James’ discography can be found on the major online platforms and a selection of his CDs are available for purchase at today’s performance.
