Metalheads Against Xenophobia/ M.A.X Campaign

Max

Started in April 2015 by Samantha Nandi Jack (Zimbabwean) and Shane Jackson (South African), the M.A.X Campaign has grown tremendously over the last few months. With the intent of only having three events, they had the opportunity to host five gigs with the support of metalheads across the continent.

The M.A.X Campaign is a nationwide attempt to unite the fans of the alternative scene in solidarity against the spate of xenophobic violence that has recently resurfaced in South Africa. The main mission of the campaign is not only to raise awareness, but to make a difference by having the African Metal scene come together from all corners (Gauteng, Durban, Cape Town, Mozambique and KwaZulu-Natal ) and throw massive benefit and awareness concerts.

The profits raised (and donations in form of clothing, blankets, food etc.) from the shows was given to foundations helping those who have lost their homes, belongings and loved ones to these senseless hate fueled attacks. They had an unbelievably positive response from anyone who has come across the Facebook page and website. With offers to host extra events from Gorofest (Mozambique) and KwaZulu-Natal, branded mugs from Imagine Photography, designs from Vinci Illustration & Design, a campaign song written by Marc Olwage (Suiderbees), sponsored song recording by 7-String Studios, as well as sponsored hampers from Paul Bothner Music and Burning Tone Records, they have managed to make this campaign bigger than ever imagined.

Contrary to the negative stereotypes, the metal community is filled with people who care and have a social conscience, and a sense of right and wrong. They have felt the effects of social discrimination and believe in the spirit of coming together as one; despite their differences, backgrounds and beliefs.
