Get Into the Loop on Looping

Roarke Angelbright

For most musicians, there is nothing better than playing in a band, but there is a growing subset of musicians who prefer to play solo. For a long time, these musos would play with backing tracks, but as technology evolved and looper pedals got better, more musicians changed from backing tracks to live loops. What is Alt-Folk?

While Contemporary Folk contains some of the gentleness of its traditional parent, Folk, Alt-Folk, also known as Alternative Folk, combines an acoustic sound with a more energetic sound from a strong singer-songwriter.

Alt-Folk was started in the 1990s by musicians from indie rock scenes influenced by folk music.

Some popular Alternative Folk artists include Billy Bragg, Lucinda Williams, Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams, Mrs. Greenbird, and Victoria Williams.
