Drum Day Expo 2015 Review

drumday - articleThe annual Drum Day Expo took place on Saturday 15th August 2015 at the Goodwood Sports Club.

There was a sense of excitement in the air as the guests started arriving. In the registration hall, a kiddies corner was set-up with two electronic drum kits set up, where kids were given the opportunity to try out some new and exciting toys. Some were even taught the a basic 4/4 rhythm on the kits.

Inside the hall there was a Drum Expo set up the likes of which the country has never seen. Every big name drum brand was there, from Tama and Yamaha to Mapex and Zildjian. It was like a mini NAAM show.

There were some unbelievable specials on offer. A Zildjian Crash that was retailing at R5995 was on special for R1650 and sticks that were R225 a pair went for as little as R50 a pair at one point.

The first performance of the day was the Caledonian Pipe band, who marched into the venue playing the bag pipes accompanied by marching drummers. After playing a few songs in the venue the band kept playing as they marched out again.

After the Caledonian Pipe Band, Devin Jones took to the stage to present a workshop on Drumming for Jeremy Loops. Devin brought a few Jeremy Loops backing tracks along and played the drum tracks live, to demonstrate his approach to hybrid drumming and how he deciphers songs and adds drum tracks to each song.

Next up was the head line event of the day. Lance Rhoda & Mornay Hoffmeester presented their clinic on the Elements of Drumming. This unique workshop took the form of a conversation between two drummers and their drum kits as they discussed and demonstrated their different approaches to the key elements of drumming.

After the excitement of the double header workshop, the finals for the fastest hands competition was held. The under 13 division was won by Sam Watt with a score of 574. The under 19 division was won by Dillon Myburgh with a score of 851 and the open division was won by Peter Morgenrood with a score of 1032.

Just for the fun of it, there was also an informal “fastest feet” competition. Joshua Haller with a score of 924.

Every year Drum Day has grown and become more and more of well oiled machine. I’m really excited to see what Drum Day 2016 will hold in store!
