Cape Town Marimba Festival 2018

Cape Town Marimba Festival
There’s something special about the marimba. While no-one is sure where it originated from, no one can doubt the impact it’s made in African music. Walk around anywhere where tourists hang out, and you’ll be sure to find a marimba band busking.

Despite that, the marimba as an instrument is not very well developed in South Africa; there are very few teachers, and the instrument itself can be expensive. That’s where the annual Marimba festival comes in.

Cape Town Marimba Festival

The annual Cape Town Marimba Festival is aimed at the development and growth of the marimba in South Africa. Funds raised from the show go towards providing instruments and teachers to school who would otherwise be unable to afford them.

The festival is a joint venture between the Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival and Woodworx Marimbas. Around the Cape, Woodworx Marimbas is responsible for the tuition of approximately 400 students in marimba bands in schools and organisations.
