Barleycorn Monday 22 Feb

Barelycorn
Naledi Masilo

Newcomer Naledi will be gracing the Barleycorn stage for the first time. Citing music as an escape into a world undiscovered, Ledi is an acoustic-soul singer/songwriter who complements her voice with guitar and piano. She strives to use music as platform to change how people think about the world, and to make a difference. Reminiscent of singers such as Corinne Bailey Rae and Lauryn Hill, Ledi also writes music that expresses emotions such as love, insecurity and heartbreak. In her Cape Town debut performance, she will be singing both original music and contemporary covers.

Devin Harmer

Devin is a Cape Town based singer-songwriter that makes acoustic, folk(ish) music. He loves playing songs, but probably loves writing them more! After leaving Joburg he began performing as a solo artist under the alias of ‘Ends and the Ocean’ but that proved to be as much of a tongue-twister as “a box of biscuits, a box of mixed biscuits and a biscuit mixer” so he started doing shows without the ever-confusing alias. He’s played all over Cape Town and at a few spots in Joburg. He’s also working on an EP at the moment. He returns to the Barleycorn tonight.

Lift Club

Lift Club is a three piece acoustic band comprising Andrew Janisch (vocals, guitar, mandolin, banjo), Crick Lund (vocals, double bass, acoustic bass guitar) and Lawrence Helman (vocals, guitar and percussion). They play a wide range of original material and covers. Andrew is a well-known Cape Town singer/songwriter. He released an album called “Heart” and his music has surfaced on the local TV series, “Going Nowhere Slowly”. Crick played in a number of Cape Town bands from the mid 90’s, including the Truly Fully Hey Shoo Wow Band and Chameleon. Lawrence cut his teeth on the Cape Town folk music circuit way back when.

Digby and the Lullaby

There is something undeniably captivating about Digby and the Lullaby. Perhaps it’s their introspective honesty and uncomplicated melodies, or perhaps it’s the fact that their journey as a singer-songwriter duo swept them off their own feet and down the aisle. Most fans and critics, however, think it’s simply that these two complement each other perfectly.

From Cape Town to New York, Rouchelle Hubsch (on piano and vocals), and Darren Peens (on guitar and vocals) have cast their indie-folk spell on audiences everywhere. Their live performances to date include shows at Kirstenbosch, The Chaplin in Port Elizabeth, Googies in New York, The Rhumbelow Theatre, Durban, Potters Place Jeffreys Bay, The Cash Store Port Elizabeth and for three years running: the prestigious Hilton Arts Festival in Durban. They also scooped a Standard Bank Ovation Award at the 2014 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. The album ‘The Somewhere Wind’ – produced in New York by Kieran Kelly (Angus and Julia Stone, Better Than Ezra) – has now officially been released and enjoyed by fans across the globe, take a listen here http://www.digbyandthelullaby.com/music/the-somewhere-wind-2/
