Artist Profile: Mornay Wandrag

Mornay Wandrag

Mornay Wandrag started playing the drums when he was around seven years old, and like most young drummers he practised every day after school.

He got a few lessons from Eben Groenewald and Johan Barnard who taught him the basics of what drumming is and how to play in church.

When Mornay was 13, he started his playing career by playing in his church band. In 2015 he got his first job as a drum teacher at Zamar Academy of Music. At first, he started with four students, and after two years he had 18 students. In 2017 the Zamar Academy of Music closed their doors, so he founded the Mornay Drumming Academy which after one year already has 30 students.

We took some time to chat with Mornay about the Mornay Drumming Academy and Paul Bothner Music.

How did you first get involved with Paul Bothner Music?

How I got involved with Paul Bothner Music is an Amazing story. I had a dream of selling drumsticks to my students in Worcester. So the one day I went to Paul Bothner Music Stellenbosch, and I asked if I could speak to the manager.

I told him I was from Worcester, and I want to sell drumsticks for my students, and he really liked the idea. A few later Jaco, the store manager, emailed me and told me that I could come and pick up my stock in Stellenbosch. I feel like part of the Paul Bothner Music family, and it’s been an honour to be part of it!

What are your plans for this year?

This year is going to be a very interesting year for me. Some friends and I started a band together called “Vibrand Island”. We are doing cover songs for now but already busy writing original songs. I am also in a Worship band called “Freedom”. We are having a Worship event on the 30th of March at the Mountain Mill Mall in Worcester. You should come check it out. I will also be playing drums for Andre van Eeden and Nadine Blom later this year.

What social media channels should people use to check out your playing?

I also run my YouTube channel “Mornay Drumming”, and like to entertain myself and other people by doing drum covers on YouTube. At first, I started recording myself with my cell phone, and it actually worked. I’ve recently bought myself some awesome recording gear, and later in this year, I will post some free online drum lessons.
