Artist Profile: Louise Day

AH Louise Day
“You don’t choose Music; Music chooses you.”

So says Louise Day, South African folk/pop singer and songwriter from Cape Town. Extremely talented and personable, Louise is a busy musician, juggling a recording and performance schedule that involves sharing the stage with some of South Africa’s top musicians as well as regular solo gigs. Her smooth and pure voice, unique blend of pop and folk music, compelling song writing and frequent collaborations with the big names of South African music make her a popular local player.
A singer and performer since the age of ten, Louise fully committed to a career in music after spending a year touring the US with Fender, representing its new range of guitars specifically for women. As a brand ambassador for the music instrument company, she helped promote women songwriters and guitarists, and this plum assignment found her playing festivals across the States, alongside names like John Mayer, The Fray, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and The English Beat.
Since her return to South Africa, Louise and her band have recorded two albums – Chasing the Wind and Swallowed by the City — and will be hitting the studio in 2015 to produce a third, to be released later in the year. Swallowed by the City received a SAMA (South African Music Awards) nomination for best Pop Album. It was produced by Theo Crous (Parlotones, Prime Circle, Louise Carver, Flat Stanley, The Dirty Skirts), and features 11 original songs written by Louise. Her songs have been playlisted on East Coast Radio (ECR), Kfm, Highveld Stereo, Smile FM, MFM, East Rand Stereo and Puk FM.
In addition to opening for Just Jinger at GrandWest in the band’s first show back in South Africa after returning from LA, Louise has shared the stage with the likes of Shaun Jacobs, Beatenberg, Macstanley and Prime Circle, and sings regularly at important charity events, including the annual Ard Matthews Charity Show, 5 for Change and fundraisers for Equinox Trust.
Music videos brilliantly showcase Louise’s lingering vocals and straightforward style, and her videos “Sunlight” and “Closer” have seen great success on SABC 2, SABC 3, MTV and other local stations. Her media experience also includes an appearance on the Espresso Show. She is an avid runner and has been featured in Runner’s World as well as Grazia, People and Longevity magazines. With a soul full of rhythm and a head full of lyrics, she is always looking towards a bright future.
