Zildjian Cymbology Series

ai-cymbology

The Zildjian Cymbology series is aimed at exploring the art of cymbal playing.

Every element of your drum kit has an influence over your tone. From the sticks and skins you use to your shells and cymbals. The Zildjian Cymbology Series aims to help you make the right cymbal selection. This is because there are thousands of cymbals out there, and finding the perfect set can be daunting.

As a drummer, you must select the size, material, and construction techniques of each symbol you use. You must also decide how many cymbals to use.

Cymbals range in size; from small CD-sized all the way to 40 inches! Most beginner drummers will start off with just the hi-hats and the crash. As they get more advanced and start to look at adding more sounds, drummers add more and more cymbals to their setup. In 2009, Mike Portnoy was using 26 cymbals and a gong!

Different styles of music require different cymbal setups. Because of this, each cymbal setup requires its own unique playing style and technique.

So how do you decide what cymbals to use? With so many techniques out there, which ones should you focus on? How many cymbals should you have for your specific style? The Zildjian cymbology series aims to answer these questions.

Zildjian has asked a few of South Africa’s top drummers to talk about their cymbals. Who better to offer expert tips on cymbal selection and playing styles, than working drummers?

Each drummer will talk about why they chose their rig, and what techniques they use to develop their tone. They will discuss topics on musicality, signature tone-crafting personalised techniques and cymbal selection.
