The BV Concert Band

Music and cultural exchange between South Africa and Norway will be boosted this June when the BV Concert Band tours the Mother City to collaborate with local school and community music projects.

Ace South African saxophonist and music ambassador Shannon Mowday will return home to direct the 13-piece band from Bondi and Vettre schools in Oslo.

The group consists of senior members in the ensemble of 54 youth musicians drawn from community marching- and concert bands, which have been havens for Norway’s youth musicians for decades.

Mowday, a former conductor of the National Schools Big Band and a Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year for Jazz, has built a successful career as a performer of a variety of music, from the Minstrel Carnival, to the stages of major jazz festivals and classical music concert halls. She is a bandleader, recording artist and former teacher at Bishops, UCT and Cape Flats music projects such as Turfjamp.

Mowday has been working in Norway for several years and has transformed the fortunes of the BV Concert Band since 2011, incorporating Norwegian and South African folk music in the group’s performances. Their largely South African repertoire was well received at a recent gathering attended by the Norwegian Prime Minister.

In Cape Town the band will collaborate with ensembles from Groote Schuur and Bergvliet High Schools, the Delft Big Band, Kronendal Music Academy and the music department at Solms-Delta wine estate.

Mark Haze Releases New Single Featuring Theo Crous

Mark’s new single, called Time, features one of South Africa’s greatest musicians, Theo Crous. Together they wrote this song. In many ways it’s about human nature and the appeal to change their world. In the greater sense, it’s a song that’s aimed at their fellow countrymen. It’s about standing up and making a difference in a country of people constantly in unrest. When Mark sings: “It’s time, and I’ll see you there”, they’re talking about a future where we are all united in peace.

Legendary Tosin Abasi Guitar Clinic at Zula Bar – Review

Tosin Abasi is considered to be one of the world leaders in guitar playing development, both in terms of his technical ability and his range of guitar tones. His playing blends advanced techniques, ranging from intense finger tapping, to poly-rhythms, sweep picked arpeggios, high speed picking and Hybrid picking in a way which is not only articulate and dynamically rich but also unique in terms of his choice of note values. His music can be described as Sci-fi Cinematic-Afro-Metal-Jazz-Electronica-Neo Classical-Funk. Some label it Prog Metal… The music is so laden in an advanced form of the kinds of grooves that B-Boys would Robot, Pop and Lock to, that you might start to see how many music styles are crossing over into each other, more and more, and that it’s a required evolutionary step in human development.

When asked, at the clinic, what gave him the impetus to focus his strengths in those particular directions, he said that his advanced technical development began, when initially listening to bands like Nirvana, he stumbled upon technical geniuses, like Yngwie Malmsteen. This eventually developed into an affinity toward Prog Metal bands like Meshuggah. From there, he started to develop his technique to match his musical ideas. The urge to express the fiery surges of musical energy, eventually became his lauded musical style. Obviously, without his extremely powerful musical ideas, his music might have become pigeon-holed by typical mass media misrepresentation and lost under the banner of unmarketability. His tenure with bands, playing in similar styles, followed by a one year long course at The Atlanta Music Institute, and a strong intellect, make Tosin Abasi and Animals as Leaders much more relevant than the mass media of fashion masquerading as musicality. Fortunately, Ibanez has created a masterpiece instrument and found the right protagonist to convey expression and social conscience, in a way which is useful to real human development. Tosin Abasi is not shallow…

When asked about his American-Nigerian roots, and the effect on his musicality, he said that he was not influenced so much by the music he listened to around his parents, which was more “tropical” to him but that there could be a subliminal or genetic reference.

Ibanez’s Tosin Abasi Signature Series guitar was mind-blowingly rich in tone. He showed us the tone from pickup position to position, and how the instrument goes from sounding like a well balanced neo-classical lead guitar, to grind-core, twang, funk and be-bop, without having to do any pedal switching. Its DiMarzio Ionizer 8™ pickups were designed by Steve Blucher, to Tosin Abasi’s specifications. Steve Blucher is the man who designs pickups for artists like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.

His sound rig includes a Fractal Audio MFC-101 Midi Foot controller, a Fractal Audio AXE-FX Ultra system, a custom made Boomerang Phrase Sampler, a Furman M-8 Power Conditioner, and a Voodoo Lab Ground Control.

Instead of using an amp onstage, he managed to run his rig directly through the PA system, using amp simulations. The tone was very powerful in harmonics and showed great string to string balance, so that the higher pitched passages were equal in harmonic strength and volume, to the lower pitched ones. The clarity per note was well defined, when he played at great speed, in whichever range. All of this, without losing a well rounded sense of what high gain guitar sounds are famous for: wailing, grinding and having vocal qualities that move human ear-drums in a way that keeps people coming back for more.

This clip features an etude he composed to work on a newer technique. He combines sweep picking and hybrid picking for a circular, harp-like effect. Done with the Ibanez Tosin Abasi Signature Guitar, the TAM100.

Animals as Leaders

When Tosin Abasi released his debut solo album under the moniker ANIMALS AS LEADERS in 2009, few would have predicted the band’s meteoric rise over the next two years. Although Abasi earned acclaim as the lead guitarist in the Washington, D.C.-based metalcore act Reflux, it was still a long-shot that an instrumental album of progressive metal with jazz, electronic and ambient flourishes would develop anything more than a cult following.

Fast-forward two-plus years to “Weightless,” the group’s sophomore effort, and ANIMALS AS LEADERS is revered worldwide as a trailblazing pioneer of modern heavy music. The group’s genre-defying compositions have earned extensive praise — Steve Vai called the band “the future of creative, heavy virtuoso guitar playing,” and MetalSucks recently ranked Abasi #2 on their list of modern metal’s top guitarists — and the diversity of their music has enabled them to tour with a wide variety of acts, including Deftones, Underoath, Circa Survive, BTBAM, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Faceless, Thursday, Dredg and, on the 2010 Summer Slaughter tour, even Decapitated.

Whereas the group’s self-titled debut was a collaboration between Abasi and Periphery’s Misha Mansoor, “Weightless” features the recording debut of ANIMALS AS LEADERS, the true band — that is, Abasi (guitars), Javier Reyes (guitars) and Navene Koperweis (drums). After nearly two years of touring together, the trio wrote and recorded “Weightless” together in mid-2011, with Koperweis producing and Reyes mixing. The group debuted a new track, “Isolated Incidents,” during their inaugural headlining tour this summer, which included sellout shows from coast-to-coast — a sign that as quickly as ANIMALS AS LEADERS have risen, the best is yet to come.

Slash’s Seymour Duncan Signature Series Pickups

Though he has dozens of amazing guitars, since 1986 Slash has used pretty much one very special guitar for all recording. The Alnico II Pro Slash was designed to give Slash’s other Les Paul guitars-what he calls his “live guitars”-the exact tone of this legendary instrument.

Application
Warm, moderate output humbucker. Recommended for jazz, blues, and classic rock.

Description
Like the standard APH-1 Alnico II Pro, this pickup uses an Alnico 2 magnet. However, the Slash model is wound with just enough boosted output to push a stock dual-humbucker styled guitar toward the sweet sustain and rude crunch that characterizes Slash’s sound as heard on hundreds of tracks.

In addition, it comes with some of the same appointments found on the Seymour Duncan pickups in Slash’s ’86 recording axe, including single-conductor cable, long-legged bottom plate, and wooden spacer. For the true fan, or the player who wants to capture Slash’s recorded tone, this pickup is a critical part of the tone chain. This is same pickup found in his newest signature series guitar.

Complete setup
The Slash aficionado will use a pair of these pickups to capture that unmistakable tone. This pickup matches well with the SFX-11 Twin Tube Blue all-tube overdrive-distortion stompbox for singing leads and authoritative chording.

Guitars
While designed for use in a Les Paul, this pickup works well in any well-balanced humbucker-equipped guitar. Also works great with hollow and semi-hollow body guitars.

Available Mods
Available in black, zebra, or reverse zebra. The infamous Slash recording guitar has a reverse zebra pickup in the bridge position and a zebra pickup in the neck position. This pickup is available individually or in the zebra/reverse zebra set.

Players
Slash

AKAI Pro’s MAX49 MIDI Controller

With an intuitive layout and the included AkaiConnect automatic-mapping software, MAX49 offers a fully immersive experience with virtually all VSTTM plug-ins and music software. From its 49 semi-weighted keys and 12 real MPC pads, to its groundbreaking LED touch faders and vintage CV & Gate outputs, MAX49 combines cutting-edge Akai Pro technology with classic capabilities, to deliver an unprecedented music-making experience.

MAX49 represents the state of the art for keyboard controllers. It’s an instant standout due to its most distinguishing feature: four banks of eight backlit LED touch faders, allowing the assignment of up to 32 control parameters. These illuminated LED touch faders can be used like analog faders by simply dragging a finger along the strips, or musicians can perform instant leaps in any MIDI value from zero to maxed out—an unparalleled keyboard controller capability.

Equipped with four banks of 12 backlit MPC pads, MAX49 provides a total of 48 assignable pads, allowing for the integration of legendary Akai Pro production capability into live performances and recording sessions alike. These velocity sensitive pads come with classic MPC Swing, Note Repeat, Full Level and navigation controls to allow musicians to create music at the highest level.

MAX49 comes ready to command any controller hardware or software from any era: USB MIDI, traditional 5-pin DIN MIDI as well as Control Voltage and Gate outputs give users the ability to control everything from today’s most advanced music software to analog modular synths from as far back as the 1960s. Mackie Control and HUI protocols also give instant compatibility with many industry standard DAWs.

49 semi-weighted keys with Aftertouch are onboard, providing professional feel, perfect response and full musical expression. Large, centrally positioned transport controls offer straightforward track navigation, while rubberized pitch and modulation wheels provide for creative flourishes. MAX49′s expanded arpeggiator includes a latch button as well as eight different time divisions to create sweeping and endlessly varied melodic cascades. A built-in step sequencer allows musicians to bring their music from concept to reality with exacting detail.

Included AkaiConnect automatic-mapping software allows users to be up and running in their favorite DAW and VST plugins in seconds, eliminating the guesswork.

“We wanted to build a controller that pushes the boundaries but also embraces classic technology,” said Dan Gill, Akai Professional Product Manager. “MAX49 combines features and technology that have never been together before – we can’t wait to see how musicians will use it.”

Yamaha HS80M Powered Monitors

Designed as true reference monitors with exceptionally flat response. If your mix sounds good here, it’ll sound good everywhere.

Features

2-way bass-reflex bi-amplified near-field studio monitor

8″ cone woofer and 1″ dome high-frequency unit

42Hz – 20kHz frequency response.

120 watts dynamic bi-amplified power.

XLR and TRS phone jack inputs accept balanced or unbalanced signals.

Level control facilitates precise overall system level matching.

MID EQ, ROOM CONTROL, and HIGH TRIM response control switches.

LOW CUT switch.

Full magnetic shielding.

Overview

When choosing reference monitors for mixing and music production, accuracy is the prime consideration. Speakers that sound “good” on first impression may not necessarily be accurate. What you really need is an honest reference for your mix, rather than monitors that have been tweaked or colored to deceptively sound impressive. The new HS series reference monitors have been created by Yamaha’s studio monitor engineering team to deliver exceptionally flat, accurate response that you can trust. Unlike “monitor” speakers with exaggerated bass and treble that make a good first impression but can’t be relied on for accuracy, the HS series were designed to be true studio reference monitors in the tradition of the legendary Yamaha NS10M.

Whether you’re mixing for stereo or 5.1 surround, mixes that sound good on Yamaha HS series reference monitors will translate accurately to the widest possible range of reproduction systems … which is engineer-speak that simply means they’ll sound good on anything. And that is the ultimate goal of any reference monitor. We should also mention that the HS-series monitors not only sound great, they look great, too.

Focusrite OctoPre MkII Preamp

Overview

With eight channels of Focusrite preamplification and a built-in 24-bit / 96 kHz ADAT output, OctoPre MkII is Focusrite’s powerful input upgrade for your Pro Tools system, or any digital audio workstation. It’s also a great expansion for any analogue or digital console, or hard disk recorder.

The digital output allows you to make the most of often-neglected ADAT inputs; ideal for expanding the number of mic pre inputs on your interface.
Mic preamps optimised for tracking drums

OctoPre MkII is designed not to clip, with preamps optimised to handle extreme levels from sound sources like kick drum and snare.

Two quality Hi-Z instrument inputs

OctoPre MkII’s first two channels feature DI’s, ready for you to plug in your guitars and bass, instantly accessible on the front fascia.

5 LED input metering on every channel

OctoPre MkII’s fast-acting 5-LED input meters provide clear reference of input levels, helping you to avoid analogue or digital clipping.

-10dB Pads on every channel

OctoPre MkII is drum-ready, with 10dB pads to stop hot signals from overdriving the microphone preamp.

Direct outputs on every channel

For routing and flexibility, especially in the live environment. Each mic pre can be routed to the mixer’s analogue channels, with two mirrored ADAT outputs (44.1) left free to send to digital recorders.

48V Phantom power available on every channel

Switched in two groups (1-4 and 5-8) every channel is capable of supplying phantom power, for use with most condenser microphones.

State-of-the-art clocking solutions

OctoPre MkII’s internal clock delivers a jitter performance of < 10 PPM. For external clocks, a BNC connector is provided and industry-standard JetPLL™ jitter elimination technology is employed.
