Played by hand or with sticks. Great dynamic range. Quick response to the lightest touch. Opens up for full crash sound. Add a three rivet cluster for a great sizzle effect.

The Azuka Latin Multi-Crash Hand & Stick was the first cymbal to be designed to be played with the hand, providing conga and bongo players with cymbal sound colors for the first time.

Zildjian teamed up with Alex Acuna to create the Azuka cymbal line especially made for Latin Percussionists. “When I add percussion to my drumset, I often play congas and bongos with my left hand and the rest of the kit with a stick in my right. For years, I wanted to be able to play a cymbal with my left hand. Then I thought, a cymbal that you could play with your left hand would open up a whole new world of sound for all Latin Percussionists.”

Proel’s EDGE8CXP
Compact 2-way Coaxial Full-range Speaker

The EDGE8CXP is a diffusion system with the characteristics of being truly compact and versatile. The custom made co-axial speaker has been developed on the specifics of the PROEL Research and Design laboratory. The results have been aimed at producing the best performance from an 8” woofer combined with a 1” driver.

The woofer is comprised of an ISV (Interleaved Sandwich Voice Coil) and an aluminium casing. The double ventilated die-cast basket has been designed the have improved heat dissipation and thereby reduce the power compression level. The compression driver provides better excursion control and reduces distortion through use of Ferro-fluid. The diaphragm has been constructed with a new synthetic material which, together with the reinforced radius design increases the rigidity and thereby avoiding the formation of uncontrolled vibrations. The phase plug is the result of a meticulous study and has been designed using 3D CAD software to realise a shape that guarantees a correct acoustic impedance which reduces dramatically the levels of distortion. The pressed Aluminium voice coil assures low distortion and high efficiency with good power handling. The EDGE8CXP has an internal 12dB per octave passive crossover with a PTC electronic protection.

Classic Tone from the AKAI Company

Up to 1200ms of real analog delay.

The Akai Professional Analog The Akai Professional Analog Delay, part of the Analog Custom Shop product line, is essential ammo in the modern guitarists effects pedal arsenal. Analog Delay provides three-dimensional control in heavy-duty polished stainless-steel housing. True-bypass switching, adjustable Mix, Time and Repeat knobs and a durable Time Switch toggle provide precision delay control.

Analog Delay’s toggle-switch adjusts the Time knob so that it functions between 0-600ms or 0-1200ms of delay. This range of settings encompasses delay sounds evocative of the classic slap-back popularized by rockabilly and surf to the urgent, atmospheric echo which prevailed in the ‘80s and remains popular today.

Three knobs are the heart of Analog Delay’s precision control. Mix allows guitarists to dial in the precise amount of delay effect for the current performance. In association with the Time Switch toggle, the Time knob controls the length between repeats. Repeat controls how many duplicates of the source sound are generated. Using Mix, Time and Repeat knobs in conjunction provides a multitude of delay styles ranging from spacey freedom to direct duplication and everything in-between.

Analog Delay is powered by the included 9-volt battery or 9v DC adapter (sold separately).

The Analog Custom Shop consists of these pedals: Phase Shifter, Analog Delay, Blues Overdrive, Chorus, Compressor, DRIVE 3 Overdrive, Deluxe Distortion, Flanger, DRIVE 3 Fuzz, and DRIVE 3 Distortion.

Punch out a drumbeat on great-feeling pads, open up a filter with smooth, tight knobs, or adjust volume and playback of sequencing software with long faders and snappy buttons. QX49′s immense parameter control and velocity-sensitive keyboard get your hands off of the mouse and into the action for a more efficient, visceral music-making experience.

With a 49-note keyboard, the QX49′s pitch range is perfect for performing with software instruments and samplers while still remaining highly portable. Furthermore, the QX49 provides keyboard players with a full compliment of controls including pitch and modulation wheels, octave up/down buttons and the ability to send program changes directly from the keys. The QX49′s keyboard can even be split into sections to control multiple instruments at once!

The QX49′s array of assignable controls work with virtually all music software and MIDI hardware devices. Whether you’re looking to fire drum samples, tweak a software synthesizer or adjust individual tracks in a mix, the QX49′s extensive layout ensures appropriate feel and proper response with its eight sliders and rotary knobs, four backlit drum pads and dedicated transport controls.

The compact controller features USB-MIDI and traditional MIDI jacks for easy connection to Mac, PC and MIDI hardware. The QX49 also has two traditional MIDI jacks: one for sending MIDI data directly from the keyboard and the other for routing MIDI data from a connected computer. When not using a computer, the QX49 can also be powered using a wall power adaptor (sold separately) to perform and control MIDI hardware. A footswitch input is also included on the back panel.

The QX49 comes with a copy of Ableton Live Lite Alesis Edition software for performing, recording, and sequencing music right out of the box. The QX49 is also the perfect choice for controlling hardware MIDI devices. Its compact size and portability make it ideal for fitting into existing rigs and then hitting the road. Place it a tier above an existing workstation keyboard and utilize QX49′s streamlined layout to maximize your sound and performance options.

Start taking full control of your favorite music software or hardware devices with the QX49.

Perusin’ the Blues

by Bluesman / Master of All Trades – Duri Dhansay

Dust off your tin sandwich harmonica and sweep up the porch, because today we’re talking about the blues. Blues began in the USA, but its roots emanate from the struggle and hardship in the hearts of slaves, plucked from Africa. It has influenced numerous styles of music, with everything from jazz, to early rock and metal being saturated with the depth of its influence. Let’s start from the beginning – the blues feel…

Shuffle

The central rhythm in blues is based on the triplet (3 notes per beat). Shuffles sound like a cross between a galloping horse, a salt shaker sprinkling salt on your beef and a freight train, cruisin’ to the other side of the Delta. Essentially, you have two beats close to each other, as opposed to the galloping horse’s 4 hoof beating sound. To get that bluesy character, you’ll want to tie the middle quaver of the triplet to the first, creating what is known as the blues shuffle. Examples of these are Muddy Waters’ Hoochie Coochie Man or ZZ Top’s La Grange.

Try this out on a single major chord to start with, with slightly heavier downstrokes on the beat and upstrokes on the upbeat. For a more ‘hurried’ feel, replace the middle triplet with a rest. Try moving over to the IV chord of the key with the same feel, then back to the I. For example, if you’re in A major, go from A to D and back. Now the steam train’s really starting to leave the station!

12 Blissful Bars

The 12-bar blues is the main structural unit in blues as well as several other genres. This chord progression travels around the I, IV and V chords of a key in various permutations (in the key of A major that’s A, D and E). Here’s the core repeatable progression, which I highly recommend you memorise:

// I / I / I / I / IV / IV / I / I / V / IV / I / I //

As you can imagine, there are countless variations, the most common replacing the I in the final bar with a V, often on the offbeat. Remember to practice this in different keys! You may notice the feel quickly becomes automatic – that’s because you’ve probably heard this progression many times in different contexts without realising it.

Improvisation

Now that you’ve got the comp down, it’s time to get to the heart of the blues: Improvisation. If you don’t have a bassist or second guitarist on hand, grab a phrase-looper or some kind of recording device to relay the 12-bar progression. To start with, try improvising over it with a standard minor pentatonic starting on the same root as the tonic, so if you’re in A, play an A pentatonic. In typical blues fashion, you can stay on this scale for the entire 3-chord progression, or start a new pentatonic with each shape matching the roots. To get started in the right mood, try playing licks synched with the same shuffle feel, or even triplets – you’ll get comfortable in no time!

Important: Try to know where all your root notes are. There are three in the standard minor pentatonic box. Think of them as ‘home’. Those are your comfort zones. If you end phrases on them you’re pretty much safe in terms of consonance, but don’t be afraid to stray a bit far from home for interest’s sake.

The blues is rooted in struggle, and there’s struggle in the music as well. If you haven’t noticed, you’re playing minor scales over major chords. That constant conflict between the major and minor 3rds is common to the blues sound. The essential resolution of the sound is how the guitarist bends into the major 3rd from the minor position. This is what helps to generate the “blue’ notes, or more vocal qualities found in blues music, more like human speech and sounds found in Nature.

Really Playing Them Blues

Okay, after that becomes quite easy, it’s time to add some gusto. Firstly, we’ll add some interest to the chords by extending them into 7ths. Although conventionally that would mean turning chords I and IV into major 7ths, in the typical blues style, ALL the chords in the progression are extended into dominant 7ths. Now you’re really getting an authentic blues sound! Feel free to mix up major and dominant 7th chords in the progression. Next, we’ll extend the pentatonic scale into the ‘blues’ scale, which is the same pattern with the addition of a note between the 3rd and 4th notes on the A string. In the key of A that’s D# or Eb. Add the octave on the G string as well and you’ve got a standard blues scale pattern! This is essentially a ‘blue’ note, one of the most important in the style, and it’s a workaday habit to really highlight this note while improvising. Another standard is adding plenty of dazzlers, so don’t be shy with bends, slides, grace notes, slurs, and particularly vibratos. Try adding some double-stops created from scale notes as well, and you’ll quickly learn which note combinations work well together. Next, you’ll want to add some arpeggio notes. Try matching a dominant 7th based broken-chord lick under each chord, which will add that major 3rd into your lead, or combine it with the blues scale to create a hybridised scale. After that, experiment with creating new patterns by finding the five notes of the pentatonic or six notes of the blues scale in different regions of the fretboard. This opens up loads of new double-stop possibilities. If you start on the 2nd note as opposed to the root of the pentatonic and follow through, you get a sound more conducive to a major blues, or even country style. This is often referred to as the pentatonic major scale.

A Few More Thoughts

If you’d like to bring some more scales to the party, two modes that work really well if used cleverly are the Dorian and Mixolydian. The pentatonic minor and major patterns could be thought of as functioning as shortened versions of the Dorian and Mixolydian respectively, so they make for great extensions. Consider trying to use some finger picking techniques as well. This will open up the harmonic possibilities quite a bit, not to mention the tonal advantages: you can get anything from a smooth, warm sound to an emotive bass-popping-like twang, and everything in-between, often accessible by a simple wrist adjustment. Tonally, the more options the better when it comes to blues. It’s a feelings-driven style and you really want to be able to create little emotional outbursts on your guitar. When playing, especially in an open-type key such as E, try to take advantage of the open strings available to you, as they contrast interestingly when mixed with their fretted counterparts. Well, that’s the gist of it for now, though there’s plenty more I’m sure we’ll touch on in future. Go experiment, and remember: best just let them blues get the better of you.
