COPA’s Open Day!

Date for all branches except KZN :

Saturday 30 August 2014

Cape Town: 12pm to 4pm

Johannesburg: 12pm to 3pm

Pretoria: 11am to 3pm

NB: KZN ‘s event is on the 5th of September from 12pm to 3pm

All the COPA branches listed below

Paul Bothner Music’s friends from COPA are running an Open Day. COPA is a great institution for developing your potential as a musician and as a corporate level worker in the music industry.

The Open Day includes

- a breakdown on full-time and part-time courses

- drumming demonstrations and live performances by COPA students

- one-on-one chats with Student Representative Council members, on life as a COPA student, as well as 2015 enrollments and auditions.

COPA Academy

COPA Academy, running as a part-time training facility, will, for the first time in South Africa, make a world-class product available to all aspiring musicians, producers, sound engineers, and DJ’s through a network of approved COPA Academy centres, throughout South Africa. COPA Academy is a sister company of Campus of Performing Arts. Its part-time course material is based on the full-time qualifications offered by Campus of Performing Arts. The course material is based on the nationally registered and CATHSSETA accredited programmes.

DJ Training

- COPA has partnered with DJ Ian Credible, to teach levels 2, 3 and 4 (basic to advanced). He’s training local DJ’s, on a part-time basis, in communities in the Western Cape, and via COPA Cape Town.

Click here to watch DJ Ian Credible.

- DJ’s will start by learning how to MASTER the DJ DECKS, and elevate to the level where they’ll use ABLETON LIVE over the various 12 week programmes.

- Lessons are broken into 90 minute sessions, once per week, starting at R2000 for COPA’s BASIC COURSE (a once-off opportunity), excluding the DJ part-time book, which costs R200.

- The subsequent courses increase in price, up to R5000. The most advanced course, HIGHER Education level – Stadium DJ, has now evolved to ARTIST level because of the compositional work that occurs over the 12 lessons.

- All classes can be administered on a one-on-one level, but group classes are preferred, with no more than 5 learners per group.

- There are also 2 Full-Time DJ course options. These are offered on COPA’s Higher Education Programme. With these, students can achieve a Higher Certificate, as well as a Diploma in Music Production, focusing on DJ-ing. These will be running in COPA Cape Town from 2015 onward, starting with the Higher Certificate.

Mark Haze Rocks Gauteng!

by Louis Diedericks

Paul Bothner Music endorsee Mark Haze’s recent tour to Gauteng consisted of 4 events, which started with a Bon Jovi Tribute at Dozi’s ‘Back to Roots’, on Sunday 27 July 2014. If you don’t recall, Mark Haze performed live with Bon Jovi when they were on tour in South Africa! Few local artists can beat an accolade like that.

But Mark’s list of accolades is why he’s considered to be one of the top artists in South Africa. The other 3 shows showcased his original material and were held at Rumours, Grafter’s Tavern, and at the Bapsfontein Hotel. On second guitar is the highly talented guitar wiz, Jacques Janson, ex-member of Red Light in June and Dutch Phobia. He’s pictured on the right in the photos. Jacques is the kind of guitarist who can play the Rusty Cooley and Vai riffs but has his own musical identity. Mark and his legion will return to Gauteng in September this year. Watch this space for details!

Drum Day and Fastest Hands! What You Missed Wed, 06 Aug 2014 09:51:01 +0000 Read More: Drum Day and Fastest Hands! What You Missed]]>

Drum Day and Fastest Hands! What You Missed

Super good Mapex kits and Zildjian cymbals played by hot drummers. Free entertainment. Free education. Giveaways! Tsk… Some of the best talent across the spectrum was there, from the sharp, tight, intricate, synchronization of The Cape Town Caledonian Pipe Band, to the Afro-Cuban intricacies of Daniel Bloem, the Gospel Chops funk fusion of Lance Rhoda, the BIG pounding weight behind Art Pereira’s sticks, and the mountain of explosive power which Dylan Hunt wields…

Grand West is the perfect venue for the visual and aural entertainment of such an occasion. Our Drum Day events always focus on two things: musical development and brilliant entertainment, courtesy of the doctors of rhythm… What drummer wouldn’t love the range of dynamics, tones, and ideas that the Caledonian Pipe Band pummels forth? A deaf one. Their tonal variation is a combination of different kinds of marching drums, from mid rangey tom sounds, to really BIG bass drums, and some of the most intricate snare playing. The snare drumming excellence at this Drum Day event, was courtesy of soloist champion, and Paul Bothner Claremont Drum Specialist: John Van Niekerk.

Daniel Bloem at Drum Day

Daniel Bloem’s mind-blowing command of percussion was enough to sustain Drum Day, as entertainment, all on its own. If everyone else had been absolutely mediocre, it wouldn’t have mattered. Daniel talked the crowd through the different kinds of Afro-Cuban percussion grooves, explaining each style while demonstrating. His use of 6 congas, tuned to different pitches, really illustrated what complex, melodic drumming should sound like. Lance Rhoda provided parallel grooves on a drum kit, on the other side of the stage, at certain points of Daniel’s demo, before the event developed into Lance’s workshop section.

Lance’s fusion chops and power drumming wowed the crowd, from start to finish. His sense of humour offered an entertaining counter balance to his serious abilities. He explained how to turn paradiddles into melodic and complex drum lines, instead of mundane routines. He broke them up into chunks, twisting them into new constructions, like a 3-D sound animator. A call to use our imagination was obvious and well-founded.

Art Pereira’s performance included accompaniment by his beefy toned, sci-fi thematic sounding, hard rocking, fonk and ambient conjuring, brick crushing, monolith demolishing band: The Verona Walls. What a display of chops, song writing, arrangement skills, and use of effects! Art’s anecdotes were rich in both humour and useful advice. His playing was a groove centred, power rock style, with lots of fills, synchronized with the band’s many changes of dynamics, and multitude of parts.

Fastest Hands Open Winner Peter-John Morgenrood

Fastest Hands Competition

The Fastest Hands competition featured 3 divisions this year: Under 13, Under 19 and Open. The Under 13 winner is Seth Woodberg. The Under 19 Winner is Ayeob Isaacs. And, the Open Winner is Peter-John Morgenrood, with an incredible score of 1080.

The headline artist for this event was Dylan Hunt, from Van Coke Kartel and Pestroy. He played along to tracks of artists whom he’s performed with, using backing tracks with a click track. This self-effacing artist has powerful bass drum technique, with speed, accuracy, and consistence. His demos showcased how he ‘plays for the song’ and, only at the end, did he display his advanced drum soloing chops.

Look out for these artists’ upcoming events, via facebook.

Here’s a brilliant drum solo by headline artist for the day, Dylan Hunt!

44 Ways to Warm Up Before a Gig Wed, 23 Jul 2014 09:03:50 +0000 Read More: 44 Ways to Warm Up Before a Gig]]> 44 Ways to Warm Up Before a Gig

From the worldwide family of Zildjian artist

Got a gig coming up? Playing night after night can be brutal on your body. Check out how the worldwide team of Zildjian Artists warm up before a show so they’re ready to play their best.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Bunta

1. Bunta (Tatsuya Sugawara) – Japan, Totalfat

Stretch your body and practice rudiments for at least 10 minutes each.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Cchrisse Ofosu-Osei

2. Cherisse Ofosu-Osei – UK, MIKA

I like to warm up on a drum pad for 20 minutes before a gig and do a variety of arm and wrist stretches. For the pad, I warm up with the rudiments and snare exercises from the book ‘Stick Control’ by George Stone.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Alex Salinger

3. Alex Salinger – Australia, Deez Nuts

Singles, doubles, paradiddles, flam taps, in that order.  I usually do this for about 10 min before I go play.

4. Jake Dargaville – New Zealand, Confession

Jog on the spot, push-ups and a beer!

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Roberto Gualdi

5. Roberto Gualdi – Italy, Independent

Play the following very slowly and with large movements: For wrist control, play with random accents and play paradiddles; for finger control play rolls and flams. Play very slowly and with accuracy.

6. Lucas van Merwijk – Germany, Independent

Play rolls and change from singles, to doubles, to paradiddles. Make them sound all the same.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Daniel Hanson

7. Daniel Hanson – Australia, Ball Park Music

Play basic rudiments on a soft surface with little rebound. Play each rudiment for between 1-2 minutes, gradually speeding up, until you reach maximum speed at 30 seconds, and then slowing down to walking pace at 1 minute and repeat.  Just keep the sticks in your hands for a couple of hours before the show too, you will be tapping away the whole time without even knowing it’s a warming up.

8. Ian Matthews – UK, Kasabian

See 4 above.  Although I do love 7′s. 7L  7R, together.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Steve White AC

9. Steve White – UK, Independent/Trio Valore

A meal, a walk, and some pad time.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Gary Husband

10. Gary Husband – UK, Independent

Very moderate, even tempo exercises, concentrating on consistency, accuracy, tempo, and control. I don’t try and play powerfully or fast before a show, and it doesn’t serve me well if I do. I recently experimented with a kind of “air drums” idea, where you’re literally playing your sticks in the air with no surface to play off. It’s interesting. I’m always looking for new methods.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Gino Banks

11. Gino Banks – India, Independent

Singles, doubles, and flams.  All at a medium-slow tempo, with big motions.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Joe Clegg

12. Joe Clegg – UK, Ellie Goulding

Four bars of each of the following: singles, doubles and paradiddles. Practise starting your exercise at 100 BPM and working in 4bpm increments.

13. Mark Richardson – UK, Skunk Anansie

Pad work, stretches, and deep breaths. Raising your heart rate will help to get the blood oxygenated and feed the muscles that need to go to work!

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Ash Soan AC

14. Ash Soan – UK, Recording Artist

Stretches and being physically warm before I go on.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Ben Gordon AC

15. Ben Gordon – Australia, Parkway Drive

I practice on a pad for a while and then stretch. To get the blood going, I do a kind of yoga routine, combined with push ups and sit ups.

Zildjian Buzz Roll | Atom Willard

16. Atom Willard – USA, Angels and Airwaves/Against Me

I warm up on a pillow, the same pillow I’ve had for about 12 years actually. I use a heating pad on my shoulders and space heaters near my legs while I get my hands going. This just helps get everything loose and ready.

Zildjian Buzz Roll | Brooks Wackerman

17. Brooks Wackerman – USA, Bad Religion

Yoga stretches.  Slow rudiments before lift off.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Vasya Rudenk2

18. Vasily Rudenko – Russia, Elvira T

I never warm up. But maybe if you play metal or hard rock, you may need to stretch your hands and play something on a pad.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Fredrik Lrzon AC

19. Fredrik Larzon – Sweden, Millencolin

Jump, run, play with your drumsticks on your knees or practice pad or some couch or whatever.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Akira Jimbo

20. Akira Jimbo  – Japan, Independent

Alternate single strokes of the hands and feet.  Like this:  Right Hand – Right Foot – Right Hand – Right Foot.   Left Hand – Left Foot – Left Hand – Left Foot.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Stephen Perkins

21. Stephen Perkins – USA, Jane’s Addiction

Rudiments from slow to fast, from fast to superfast, then back to slow and then super slow.  Quiet to loud and very soft.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Simon Scheibel

22. Simon Scheibel – Germany, Lake Cisco

Steve Smith´s singles and doubles exercise and the Drum Guru Lessons of Pat Petrillo… Awesome. Just figured them out by myself :-).

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Jason Bittner

23. Jason Bittner – USA, Shadows Fall

Constant singles, doubles, paradiddles on a pad, feet moving on the floor in constant singles motion etc.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll John Tempesta

24. John Tempesta – USA, The Cult

I like to get on my 6” pad for 20 mins, then do my routine of exercises, and stretch my hands and arms.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Pierre Nakano AC

25. Pierre Nakano – Japan, Ling Toshite Shigure

Stretching.  Practising under simulated conditions.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Daniel Platzman

26. Daniel Platzman – USA, Imagine Dragons

Alan Dawson’s Rudimental ritual.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Antonio Sanchez

27. Antonio Sanchez – USA, Pat Metheny

Lots of stretching and loosening of legs, ankles, forearms, and fingers.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Venzella Joy

28. Venzella Joy – USA, Beyonce

Alternating single and double stroke rolls is a good warm up.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Kent Slucher

29. Kent Slucher – USA, Luke Bryan Band

I actually just stretch about 30 minutes before the gig, I practice on the pad before sound check then I don’t touch the sticks until show time.  I like it to feel fresh when I step on stage.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Tobias Derer

30. Tobias Derer – Germany, YouTuber – Ultimate Music Covers (UMC)

Cold beer and loud single strokes!

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Ivan Panella

31. Ivan Panella – Italy, Hopes Die Last

I usually do a quick stretching routine.  Then I play some single-double strokes and diddle rudiments (slow and fast) to warm the wrists.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Matt Greiner

32. Matt Greiner – USA, August Burns Red

I usually play my best shows when I’m comfortable walking onto that stage.  If I’m tired before the show, I’ll do pushups.  If I’m cold before the show, I’ll do rudiments on a pad.  If I’m nervous I’ll forget about the show and just focus on having fun.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Toni Mateos

33. Toni Mateos – Spain, Independent

Sextuplets with hands and foot, as fast as you can (you can practice on a pad):  RLRLBB, LRLRBB, RRLLBB, LLRRBB, RBLBRB, RRBBLL BBRRLL.  (Where R=Right hand, L=Left Hand, B=Bass drum). HiHat always on quarter notes.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Ithan Haydar

34. Ihan Haydar – Denmark, L.I.G.A

Drum around on anything that can be drummed on to warm your hands and fingers.  Also make sure that your body is warmed up as well.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Jacopo Volpe

35. Jacopo Volpe – Italy, Vanilla Sky

Rudiments and stretching.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Darshan Doshi

36. Darshan Doshi – India, Bollywood/Shankar-Ehsaan-Lory

Doing basic rudiments on a practice pad in the green room.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Mike Gaspar

37. Mike Gaspar – Portugal, Independent

I do lots of sports and also during my spare time I practice, and teach Tae Kwon Do. Stretching is a big deal for me. Also: breathing exercises and even meditating a bit before gigs makes a huge difference. It’s a routine which I’ve developed mainly because of all the travelling, and sometimes doing two shows in less than 24 hours in different countries; or just all the touring mayhem you have to deal with, to get the show done.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Bernhard Schimpelsberger AC

38. Bernhard Schimpelsberger – UK, Independent

Stretching my hands and free floating paradiddles, just to get a feel of the stick in my hand.

Zildjian Buzz Roll |Samantha Mallony

39. Samantha Maloney – USA, Independent

Jumping jacks, then stretching my hands, wrists, and legs.  Then, I practice rudiments on a practice pad or bottom of my sneaker.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Barry Van Zyl

40. Barry van Zyl – South Africa, Johnny Clegg

Sound check! I rarely warm up as an accompanist.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Pete Lockett

41. Pete Lockett – UK, Independent Percussionist

I never warm up before a gig and never have done it.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | James Payne AC

42. James Payne – Italy, Hour of Penance

Single stroke rolls playing 1 limb at a time, so first right hand – then left hand – then right foot – then left foot. Then combine the 2 hands, playing alternated strokes. Then alternate strokes with your feet. Then play single stroke rolls between right hand, right foot, left hand and left foot, right hand left foot, and left hand right foot.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll | Marito Marques2

43. Marito Marques – Portugal, Independent

I warm up with single strokes on a blanket with the drumsticks that I’ll be performing with, for around 30 minutes. Any sort of technical exercise is great for warming up.

Zildjian Artist Buzz Roll Gavin Harrison

44. Gavin Harrison – UK, Porcupine Tree/King Crimson

The Jackson DKA8 – An 8 String Beauty Tue, 22 Jul 2014 11:36:52 +0000 Read More: The Jackson DKA8 – An 8 String Beauty]]>

The Jackson DKA8 – An 8 String Electric Beauty

The limited edition eight-string DKA8 Dinky features an arch-top alder body, bolt-on maple neck (flat-sawn) with graphite reinforcement and side-dot position markers, 16”-radius maple fingerboard with 24 jumbo frets and single 12th-fret shark fin inlay, stylish fingerboard and headstock binding, 26.5” scale length, dual direct-mount DiMarzio® D Activator 8™ pickups with five-way switching, single volume and tone controls, momentary kill switch (for stutter effects), recessed Jackson HT-8 eight-string hard-tail string-through bridge, Planet Waves® locking tuners and Dunlop® locking strap pins.

Jackson Pro series instruments are exactly that—pro-level guitars for pro-level players. Neck-through-body models feature hand-rubbed oil neck finishes and graphite neck reinforcement rods for the ultimate in sleek playability and rock-solid sustain and stability. Bolt-on-neck models feature an innovative “wrap-around” three-bolt neck joint with remarkable strength, style and feel.

Jackson Pro series guitars are built with the very best parts for pro tone, stability and durability for stage and studio alike. Nowhere is this more evident than the bridge. Pro series guitars feature Floyd Rose® 1000 Series tremolos, Jackson Hi-Mass hard-tail and string-through bridges.

Pro series models feature compound-radius fingerboards. Jackson pioneered the use of this innovative design, in which the fingerboard gradually flattens toward the heel from its more rounded profile at the nut. This makes for comfortable and natural-feeling chording and riffing near the nut, with optimal shred articulation and bending nearer the heel.

Pro series models present Jackson players with an alluring assortment of stylistic features and options. These include ebony, maple and rosewood fingerboards; sharkfin, offset-dot and “piranha” fingerboard inlays; deep solid colors and beautifully figured tops; and, of course, the classic Jackson six-in-line headstock.

The Roland CUBE-Lite Mon, 21 Jul 2014 13:58:05 +0000 Read More: The Roland CUBE-Lite]]>

The Roland CUBE-Lite

Stylish Guitar Amp with Built-In iOS Interface

Combining great COSM guitar tones, iOS interfacing, and a quality 2.1 Channel audio system, the CUBE Lite Guitar Amplifier lets you play and record at home along with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Connect your iOS device to the i-CUBE LINK jack and launch the free CUBE JAM app, then riff along with backing tracks and record your playing to share your music and archive song ideas. With stereo speakers and an integrated subwoofer, you’ll enjoy rich, satisfying sound reproduction for both guitar playing and casual music listening. And with an attractive look that blends with any home décor, the CUBE Lite Guitar Amplifier can occupy a permanent spot in your living space, always at the ready when you want to plug in and jam.

  • Compact guitar amp with a stylish look for home living spaces
  • JC CLEAN, CRUNCH, and EXTREME COSM tones, plus stereo chorus and reverb effects
  • Great-sounding 2.1 Channel audio system, with stereo speakers and integrated subwoofer
  • i-CUBE LINK jack provides simple audio interfacing with Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
  • Free CUBE JAM app for iOS plays songs and minus-one jam tracks, and lets you record the CUBE Lite’s COSM amp tones along with music playback
  • Includes cable for two-way communication (playback and recording) with iOS devices
  • Available in three colors: black, white, or red

Killer Guitar Tones

The CUBE Lite Guitar Amplifier provides three great COSM tones—JC CLEAN, CRUNCH, and EXTREME—giving you a wide range of sounds for playing any style of music. Reverb and chorus effects are onboard as well, with true stereo performance for a wide, expansive sound.

2.1 Channel Audio System for Impressive Sound

Equipped with stereo speakers and an integrated subwoofer, the CUBE Lite’s powerful 2.1 Channel audio system delivers a rich, full sound that belies the amp’s compact footprint. When you want to practice silently, just plug in a set of headphones to mute the onboard speakers.

Easy iOS Device Integration with i-CUBE LINK

With the newly developed i-CUBE LINK interface, the CUBE Lite Guitar Amplifier lets you integrate your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with your axe in a familiar and satisfying way—through a real amp with great tone. Other interfaces require bulky, specialized add-ons to plug your guitar direct into the iOS device, resulting in a clumsy, inconvenient playing experience. With i-CUBE LINK, you just connect to your device’s audio jack with the included cable, then blend the COSM tones and iOS audio together at the amp with simple, intuitive controls. The versatile i-CUBE LINK jack can also be used as a simple stereo input, enabling you to hook up nearly any music player or audio device and play it through the CUBE Lite.

The free Roland CUBE JAM app turns your iOS device into a fun command center for jamming, recording, and learning. Play back commercial songs and minus-one tracks through the CUBE Lite via i-CUBE LINK, and riff along for hours with awesome COSM tones. CUBE JAM also records audio through the i-CUBE LINK connection, allowing you to easily capture your jams. After you’re done recording, you can adjust the volume of your guitar and backing music independently, then export your mix to a 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAV file. The app also includes great tools for music practice, including independent speed and pitch adjustment of audio playback, Center Cancel to remove solos and create your own jam tracks, and more.

Direct Mode

Normally, recording from the CUBE Lite Guitar Amplifier into CUBE JAM or another app captures the sound as you hear it, with the COSM tone applied. Activating the CUBE Lite’s Direct Mode feature lets you capture dry guitar sounds while monitoring with the COSM sound. Recording dry tracks in this way gives you the option to experiment later by “re-amping” with any guitar app of your choice. Direct Mode also allows you to use real-time guitar processing in any app, monitoring the live output with the CUBE Lite.

Stylish Design for Modern Living Spaces

Offering an appearance more like a consumer audio system than a typical rugged-look guitar amp, the CUBE Lite blends in seamlessly with any home living space. In addition to being a great guitar amp, it also doubles as a high-quality playback system for your digital music library. With three different finishes to choose from (black, white, or red), you’re sure to find the perfect match for your home furnishings.

AKAI Pro RPM800 Studio Monitors

A Fortress of Sound

Engineered for meticulous reproduction of even the most complex modern music, Akai Professional’s RPM800 studio monitors easily handle layer after layer of sound, providing critical detail and the tools needed to mix with confidence. The fast Kevlar® cone provides lucid low-end agility, reproducing intricate bass patterns with ease. It’s authoritative sound for the craft of music production, only from Akai Professional.

Pure Bi-Amplified Power

RPM800 offers pure and accurate frequency response from 38Hz to 30kHz. The 120-Watt distributed Class A/B provides the woofer and tweeter dedicated amplification—80 Watts to the woofer, 40 Watts to the tweeter—meaning you get ultra-efficient power and minimal distortion. The flared rear-firing bass port delivers low-frequency depth and definition

Meticulous Control

Dedicated proximity and EQ-tailoring controls give you the ability to fine-tune the speaker in diverse mixing environments. RPM800 also features HF Trim, MF Boost, and LF Cutoff controls, which allow you to find the right balance in any environment. The included monitor isolation pad dramatically decreases structure-borne resonances, and the integrated radio frequency protection preserves signal purity. RPM800 includes XLR, balanced ¼-inch TRS, and RCA inputs.

Solid to the Core

RPM800’s cabinet is painstakingly reinforced to minimize flex, combating unwanted coloration while blocking anomalies and sound artifacts from polluting your mix. The no-compromise build quality is reflected even in components you’ll never see such as the recess-mounted amp, on/off transient protection, and 14-gauge wiring to transducers. RPM800 also features a built-in output current limiter, over-temperature limiter, and subsonic filter—a full array of top-notch components that make all the difference in the purity that you hear.
