The Jackson DKA8 – An 8 String Electric Beauty

The limited edition eight-string DKA8 Dinky features an arch-top alder body, bolt-on maple neck (flat-sawn) with graphite reinforcement and side-dot position markers, 16”-radius maple fingerboard with 24 jumbo frets and single 12th-fret shark fin inlay, stylish fingerboard and headstock binding, 26.5” scale length, dual direct-mount DiMarzio® D Activator 8™ pickups with five-way switching, single volume and tone controls, momentary kill switch (for stutter effects), recessed Jackson HT-8 eight-string hard-tail string-through bridge, Planet Waves® locking tuners and Dunlop® locking strap pins.

Jackson Pro series instruments are exactly that—pro-level guitars for pro-level players. Neck-through-body models feature hand-rubbed oil neck finishes and graphite neck reinforcement rods for the ultimate in sleek playability and rock-solid sustain and stability. Bolt-on-neck models feature an innovative “wrap-around” three-bolt neck joint with remarkable strength, style and feel.

Jackson Pro series guitars are built with the very best parts for pro tone, stability and durability for stage and studio alike. Nowhere is this more evident than the bridge. Pro series guitars feature Floyd Rose® 1000 Series tremolos, Jackson Hi-Mass hard-tail and string-through bridges.

Pro series models feature compound-radius fingerboards. Jackson pioneered the use of this innovative design, in which the fingerboard gradually flattens toward the heel from its more rounded profile at the nut. This makes for comfortable and natural-feeling chording and riffing near the nut, with optimal shred articulation and bending nearer the heel.

Pro series models present Jackson players with an alluring assortment of stylistic features and options. These include ebony, maple and rosewood fingerboards; sharkfin, offset-dot and “piranha” fingerboard inlays; deep solid colors and beautifully figured tops; and, of course, the classic Jackson six-in-line headstock.

The Roland CUBE-Lite

Stylish Guitar Amp with Built-In iOS Interface

Combining great COSM guitar tones, iOS interfacing, and a quality 2.1 Channel audio system, the CUBE Lite Guitar Amplifier lets you play and record at home along with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Connect your iOS device to the i-CUBE LINK jack and launch the free CUBE JAM app, then riff along with backing tracks and record your playing to share your music and archive song ideas. With stereo speakers and an integrated subwoofer, you’ll enjoy rich, satisfying sound reproduction for both guitar playing and casual music listening. And with an attractive look that blends with any home décor, the CUBE Lite Guitar Amplifier can occupy a permanent spot in your living space, always at the ready when you want to plug in and jam.

 • Compact guitar amp with a stylish look for home living spaces
 • JC CLEAN, CRUNCH, and EXTREME COSM tones, plus stereo chorus and reverb effects
 • Great-sounding 2.1 Channel audio system, with stereo speakers and integrated subwoofer
 • i-CUBE LINK jack provides simple audio interfacing with Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
 • Free CUBE JAM app for iOS plays songs and minus-one jam tracks, and lets you record the CUBE Lite’s COSM amp tones along with music playback
 • Includes cable for two-way communication (playback and recording) with iOS devices
 • Available in three colors: black, white, or red

Killer Guitar Tones

The CUBE Lite Guitar Amplifier provides three great COSM tones—JC CLEAN, CRUNCH, and EXTREME—giving you a wide range of sounds for playing any style of music. Reverb and chorus effects are onboard as well, with true stereo performance for a wide, expansive sound.

2.1 Channel Audio System for Impressive Sound

Equipped with stereo speakers and an integrated subwoofer, the CUBE Lite’s powerful 2.1 Channel audio system delivers a rich, full sound that belies the amp’s compact footprint. When you want to practice silently, just plug in a set of headphones to mute the onboard speakers.

Easy iOS Device Integration with i-CUBE LINK

With the newly developed i-CUBE LINK interface, the CUBE Lite Guitar Amplifier lets you integrate your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with your axe in a familiar and satisfying way—through a real amp with great tone. Other interfaces require bulky, specialized add-ons to plug your guitar direct into the iOS device, resulting in a clumsy, inconvenient playing experience. With i-CUBE LINK, you just connect to your device’s audio jack with the included cable, then blend the COSM tones and iOS audio together at the amp with simple, intuitive controls. The versatile i-CUBE LINK jack can also be used as a simple stereo input, enabling you to hook up nearly any music player or audio device and play it through the CUBE Lite.

The free Roland CUBE JAM app turns your iOS device into a fun command center for jamming, recording, and learning. Play back commercial songs and minus-one tracks through the CUBE Lite via i-CUBE LINK, and riff along for hours with awesome COSM tones. CUBE JAM also records audio through the i-CUBE LINK connection, allowing you to easily capture your jams. After you’re done recording, you can adjust the volume of your guitar and backing music independently, then export your mix to a 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAV file. The app also includes great tools for music practice, including independent speed and pitch adjustment of audio playback, Center Cancel to remove solos and create your own jam tracks, and more.

Direct Mode

Normally, recording from the CUBE Lite Guitar Amplifier into CUBE JAM or another app captures the sound as you hear it, with the COSM tone applied. Activating the CUBE Lite’s Direct Mode feature lets you capture dry guitar sounds while monitoring with the COSM sound. Recording dry tracks in this way gives you the option to experiment later by “re-amping” with any guitar app of your choice. Direct Mode also allows you to use real-time guitar processing in any app, monitoring the live output with the CUBE Lite.

Stylish Design for Modern Living Spaces

Offering an appearance more like a consumer audio system than a typical rugged-look guitar amp, the CUBE Lite blends in seamlessly with any home living space. In addition to being a great guitar amp, it also doubles as a high-quality playback system for your digital music library. With three different finishes to choose from (black, white, or red), you’re sure to find the perfect match for your home furnishings.

Pure Bi-Amplified Power

RPM800 offers pure and accurate frequency response from 38Hz to 30kHz. The flared rear-firing bass port delivers low-frequency depth and definition

Meticulous Control

Dedicated proximity and EQ-tailoring controls give you the ability to fine-tune the speaker in diverse mixing environments. RPM800 also features HF Trim, MF Boost, and LF Cutoff controls, which allow you to find the right balance in any environment. The included monitor isolation pad dramatically decreases structure-borne resonances, and the integrated radio frequency protection preserves signal purity. Solid to the Core

RPM800’s cabinet is painstakingly reinforced to minimize flex, combating unwanted coloration while blocking anomalies and sound artifacts from polluting your mix. The no-compromise build quality is reflected even in components you’ll never see such as the recess-mounted amp, on/off transient protection, and 14-gauge wiring to transducers. RPM800 also features a built-in output current limiter, over-temperature limiter, and subsonic filter—a full array of top-notch components that make all the difference in the purity that you hear.

Roland’s SPD-SX Sampling Pad

The Ultimate Percussive Sampling Instrument

The new SPD-SX Sampling Pad puts powerful sample creation and playback under your sticks with innovative audio-capturing features, expressive playability, three multi-effects engines, and much more. The perfect addition to any acoustic or electronic drum kit, percussion setup, DJ booth, or keyboard rig, the SPD-SX is equally at home on the live stage, in the recording studio, pre-production suite, or dance club. The SPD-SX takes many of the proven concepts from its predecessor and raises them to a new level. Whether you’re firing off one-shot samples, looped phrases, or complete audio playback tracks, the SPD-SX is loaded with the latest technology and tools to get the job done with speed, precision, and convenience. Enjoy the most advanced triggering and sampling technology in a sleek, easy-to-use percussion instrument.

 • - Unique sampling-pad concept — the only instrument of its kind in the world

 • - Nine velocity-sensitive rubber pads, two external dual-trigger inputs

SPD-SX with Acoustic Drums, “HereWeGo” Performed by Johnny Rabb

Johnny Rabb shows his excellent sense of groove on acoustic drums with 3 different Kits (Patches) of the SPD-SX for 3 different types of music. This video is a great example of how to combine acoustic drums with SPD-SX to enhance your performance.

Watch a video of the song “Into the Fire” performed by the brilliant Craig Blundell on the Roland TD-30KV drums and SPD-SX sampler, with the amazing guitarist, Alex Hutchings, on the Rolan GC-1 and GR-55.

The Playing Field

The SPD-SX is equipped with nine highly sensitive rubber pads with two independent real-time control knobs and four dedicated effect buttons. Roland’s most advanced triggering technology ensures the ultimate in accuracy and fully dynamic performance, while a large backlit LCD provides easy-to-read data in all varieties of environments. Each pad has a companion LED that illuminates to show the pad’s status. When you trigger sample phrases, the LEDs remain lit to show you which pads are in play and which are not. In addition, the LEDs change illumination strength according to audio-level activity (similar to level meters on a mixing board). The high-contrast red divider lines help you see the pad zones clearly onstage.

Improved Playability and Functionality

Today, increasing numbers of drummers and percussionists need to incorporate audio samples into their performance. The SPD-SX will satisfy their increasing requirements with essential features such as individual click output routing, dedicated volume controls, Pad Check function, individual Sub Out, and more.

Onboard Effects

The SPD-SX has three multi-effects units onboard: one master unit and two units that are assignable per kit. The master effects engine lets you perform in real time like a DJ using the dedicated front-panel controls. Get your hands on the filter, delay, short looper, and user-assignable effect — all of which can be creatively adjusted with the four front-panel buttons and two control knobs.

Multi-Pad Sampling

There’s much more to the SPD-SX than meets the eye. A powerful-yet-friendly lineup of features has been built into this little powerhouse, such as Multi-Pad Sampling. While audio streams in from an external audio player or computer (via Audio In or USB), simply strike each pad at the appropriate start/end points, and the sample will be automatically truncated and assigned to that pad. It’s a fast, friendly way to create multi-sampled phrases and pad maps.

SPD-SX Wave Manager Software Included

The SPD-SX’s generous internal memory (2 GB) lets you store and carry your entire sample library inside. With no external memory required, you can house approximately 360 minutes of audio (10,000 files) at 16-bit, 44.1 kHz, mono. The built-in USB ports let you directly import audio files from USB flash memory. The bundled SPD-SX Wave Manager software app lets you import audio files directly from computer via USB, assign the samples to each pad, and organize the thousands of samples efficiently.

Yamaha Dave Weckl Signature Snare Drums

The Dave Weckl 13″ Maple Snare

This is the original design concept Dave had for his signature drum in size and material. This drum is incredibly versatile, sounding amazing tuned high or low. Dave uses this drum now more as a second snare to his left for a tighter “pop.”

Of course, the “signature” aspect of Dave’s drums from Yamaha are the dual snare strainers.

Dave always had a problem with only one strainer. It was either too tight or too loose, and he could never quite get it comfortable. With this design, he uses one tight strainer (with normal steel wires) for the precision and one loose (with stainless steel wires) for the snare buzz to get theto get the best of both worlds simultaneously.

The 14″ snare features the same aspects as the 13″, but with the sound and feel that the traditional size offers. The dual strainer system is also featured on this drum.

The new version of this drum is now 5.5 inches in depth (instead of 5 inches).

Re-designed Zildjian ‘A’ Series Wed, 25 Jun 2014 12:15:35 +0000 Read More: Re-designed Zildjian ‘A’ Series]]>

Re-designed Zildjian ‘A’ Series

Zildjian listened to drummers when they were told that their ‘A’ line needed to be dialled into the essence of that classic sound. The Zildjian Sound Lab has made adjustments to the curvature and weights of this series, to capture the sweet spot of the ‘A’ sound, producing the best crashes, rides, and hi-hats that reflect today’s musical styles. There’s been a reintroduction of the 19” and 20” Thin Crashes and 20” Medium Thin Crash, and a new 23” Sweet Ride — all in response to drummers’ requests for larger, thinner models.

Ten popular models have been retained in the ‘A’ Zildjian cymbal family, with some having been falling under the category of Heavy A. Four Crash models – 16” – 19” are classified as Heavy Crashes. Also now found in the A Zildjian line, are the 15” Heavy Hats, 19” & 21” Ultra Hammered Chinas, 19” Thrash Ride, 21” Mega Bell Ride and 22” Medium Heavy Ride. The Trashformer cymbal has now moved to the A Family, under the FX Line.

Dirty Deed Distortion by Seymour Duncan Thu, 19 Jun 2014 09:03:15 +0000 Read More: Dirty Deed Distortion by Seymour Duncan]]>

Dirty Deed Distortion by Seymour Duncan

From the light, singing overdrive of classic rock to raunchy, screaming, ear-shattering distortion, the Dirty Deed was created for complete versatility. The tone is very organic and natural sounding; it’s designed to capture the character and responsiveness of a classic overdriven tube amplifier with elements of distortion, fuzz and overdrive combined into a single wide-range pedal. With a turn of the gain knob you can go from the sparkling overdrive of your favorite classic rock songs to a rich, powerful hard rock distortion with amp-like saturation. The distortion is thick and beefy with a sweet spot in the mid-range EQ and a strong bass response, while highly responsive Treble, Bass, Gain and Level controls allow you to dial in your ideal sound whether you’re using the Dirty Deed as your sole source of grit or you’re adding some extra dirt to an already-overdriven amp.

For maximum flexibility the Dirty Deed incorporates an active EQ for 12dB of treble and bass boost/cut. A pair of MOSFET transistors evoke the tube-like harmonics and lush sustain that only come from dangerously pushed amplifiers. Runs on standard 9v to 18v DC power supplies. At 18v the Dirty Deed enhances overall saturation and compression.

After several years of development, this analog, 100% true bypass distortion pedal is now being released to the public. Designed and assembled in Santa Barbara, California.

Smokey Blues

Everything from sweet and mellow to screaming tone

Fat Rhythm/Lead Tone
This is a great all-around sound for power chords, arpeggiated rhythm lines and leads alike. Big, fat, and saturated.
Power Crunch
This tone scoops out more of the mids while bumping the lows and highs for a mean, aggressive sound that’s razor sharp
Open Rhythm Crunch
An incredibly responsive, dynamic, chord sound. Ease up on your picking attack and it’s clean, bash it and it will roar like a lion. Rolling off the bass a touch will help keep rhythm chords clean and chiming. Depends upon your specific amp, settings and preferences of course, so experimentation is encouraged!
Big, Saturated Solo Sustain
This lead tone will sing and cry all day long. The saturation will make it easy to play legato lines but the clarity will let fast picked passages jump right out too. Just about any note you land on will sustain until you tell it to stop. This is a gorgeous solo tone.

The Lineage

Unleashed upon an unsuspecting world in the 1980s, the TR-808 and TR-909 produce arguably the most influential drum sounds in modern music. Not only have they appeared on thousands of dance tracks over the course of three decades, they’ve helped define the sound of entire musical genres. From rap and house to techno and trance, the TR-808 and TR-909 have left an indelible mark on the art and culture of music. Roll the drums…

The Sound

In developing the TR-8, Roland meticulously analyzed and faithfully recreated every detail and nuance of the analog circuitry of these legendary rhythm machines—the boom and snap of the 808; the thud of the 909; the robotic click of an 808 rim shot or a classic 909 snare roll. It’s all here. But not content with mere recreations, they’ve enhanced these classic instruments with capabilities that go far beyond the original units.

Tune and Decay knobs are now present on every instrument, and the Bass Drum and Snare Drum have additional controls such as Attack, Snappy, and Comp. This allows for a wide variety of tones, from subtle ambient percussion to pounding dance grooves. Per-step effects and the massively addictive Scatter function take things into entirely new territory.

With the authentic tone and character of the original units and new sound-tweaking capabilities inspired by legions of users, the TR-8 breathes new life into the sounds we all know and love.

The Feel

Make no mistake—the TR-8 has been carefully designed from the ground up as an instrument to be played. Every control has a solid, predictable feel, with each drum instrument having robust, “playable” faders. Numerous lighted knobs and RGB buttons give both real-time performance feedback and a striking appearance on stage.

Pattern creation is creative and intuitive using an evolved version of the TR-REC method, which originated in the TR-808 and eventually became the standard for electronic rhythm programming. Based on detailed analysis of the original TR-808, the TR-REC behavior has been faithfully modeled in the TR-8. But the TR-8 goes well beyond the original, allowing you to seamlessly switch between programming and performance modes, and to introduce lots of groovy rhythmic variations from subtle snare fills to total glitch meltdowns.

What is Scatter?

Scatter is a unique performance function that gives you detailed real-time control over variations in your patterns and any incoming external input signal.

- Scatter can reverse, glitch, gate, truncate, stutter, and perform all manner of rhythmic variations from subtle to extreme, and all in perfect sync
- Pick from 10 different types of Scatter and smoothly adjust the intensity—or “Scatter Depth”—with the large, comfortable dial
- Seamlessly switch between Scatter patterns and quickly toggle Scatter on/off for cool variations when and where you want them

Try it… you’ll like it!

A Few More Things

The TR-8 looks great and is designed to work seamlessly with other products in the AIRA series. In addition, you can connect the TR-8 to your computer via USB to send and receive both audio and MIDI data, including MIDI clock information for syncing with external devices and other AIRA units.

Analog Circuit Behavior

Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) is the technology behind the authentic sound and responsive behavior of the AIRA products. It faithfully captures the sound and feel of some Roland’s revered classics, using original design specs, consultation with original engineers, and a detailed, part-by-part analysis of each analog circuit in Roland’s pristine units. Analog electronic musical instruments consist of various analog components including resistors, capacitors, and transistors. The unique sound of analog instruments is due to the distinctive characteristics of the individual analog components. So-called “vintage” instruments, in particular, show extremely distinctive sound and behavior due to the variable instability of the electronic components.

Rhythm machines and synthesizers such as the TR-808, TR-909, TB-303, and SH-101 enjoy entrenched popularity to this very day even though they first appeared over 30 years ago. This is because musicians across the globe have recognized their unique sound and used them to forge entirely new genres of electronic music.

To produce the new AIRA products, Roland aimed to pick up where these analog classics left off and to develop a completely new technology which models the traditional analog circuits, right down to their behavioral levels.

ACB is drastically different from conventional methods of modeling, and reproduces each analog component by thoroughly analyzing each detail of the original design drawings. By combining the analyzed components in exactly the same manner as the original analog components, detailed characteristics of the original musical instruments emerge and can be reproduced completely.

This analysis requires knowledge of the design and development processes of the original analog instruments. It is not possible to reproduce the original sounds just by logically analyzing the analog circuits. This is because the original engineers used a design approach which maximized the capabilities of the analog components. Throughout the development of ACB, Roland cooperated with the original engineers who designed and developed these iconic instruments. With their expertise, they could ensure that the ideal state of their creations were fully reproduced.

Utilizing the enormous calculation power of state-of-the-art DSP, ACB not only precisely emulates the analog-specific characteristics or our classic gear, but also delves into areas the original engineers tried to go but ultimately abandoned.
