Mart-Marie Schoeman has more than a decade’s worth of experience in the South African music industry.  In the early years, she was involved with Maranatha Record Company and Merchant Music. She is currently working as a Music Business Consultant, presenting workshops across the country. She focuses a large portion of her time and expertise on her company, NewTunes Publishing, as well as the management of the international sub-publisher, CopyCare Africa.  Mart-Marie has assisted many up-and-coming artists, through kick-starting their music careers with valuable guidance.  She’s recently released a new E-book called “When music is your business”.

Neville D

Neville D is an extraordinary singer, with an incredible vocal ability and heart-warming song writing skills. He is a seasoned yet fresh South African artist, whom is set to take the world stage! Having opened for US superstars Joe, Keith Sweat and Deborah Cocks, and performed live at the prestigious Dove Awards, Neville D. is ready to showcase his experience and new songs to his home country.

Julita Kok

Julita Kok is mostly known for managing some of South Africa’s greatest Christian artists such as Loyiso Bala, Neville D, Ivan Siegelaar, Elton Jansen and many more.  Her passion is to showcase these talents.  In 2011 her showcase, Christmas with God TV, was broadcasted worldwide under the Nue Light flag, of which she is the CEO.  She has established herself as a live events organizer with a difference.  Her shows are always a great experience! Excellence is not compromised. She has also been a Worship Pastor since 2000.

JP Crouch

JP Crouch has been playing drums from the age of 12, in Church from the age of 14 and professionally for over 10 years. He is Drummer for Jesse Jordan and Gareth James and has worked with Artists like Karen Zoid, Albert Frost, The Blues Broers and Gerald Clarke and also works as a studio session and freelance drummer. JP has gained extensive experience in almost all genres of music, as a performer and drumming teacher. He is the Band Leader at his local church and also works as an MD for other artists. JP works according to 4 principles in his career, 1) Reliability, 2) Musicality, 3) Versatility and 4) Positive Attitude. How do I enter the RØDE Rocks competition?

To enter ‘RØDE Rocks’, artists need to record an original composition of more than two minutes in length and then create an accompanying video that features at least one RØDE microphone.

After uploading the video to YouTube the artist simply needs to visit www.roderocks.com and submit their details along with a link to the video.

At the end of June 2012 a panel of guest judges including Matt Sorum (Guns n’ Roses, Velvet Revolver, The Cult), David Catching (Queens of the Stone Age, Eagles of Death Metal), Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist (The Hives), James Lavelle (UNKLE, MoWax), Band of Horses, Gareth Liddiard (The Drones), Har Mar Superstar, Deuce and Warpaint will reduce the number of entrants to ten finalists, and those videos will be showcased on the RØDE website for a two week period in which all visitors will be invited to vote for their favourite performance.

What Prizes Do I Win?

First prize winners will receive return flights to Los Angeles, California to record at the famous Record Plant studios in Hollywood, with superstar producer Alain Johannes. Johannes is one of rock’s most in-demand collaborators, following his work with artists such as Chris Cornell, Queens of the Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Mark Lanegan, Them Crooked Vultures and more. Providing additional production and engineering support during the recording session will be John Merchant (Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, R.Kelly, Celine Dion, Lenny Kravitz, Phil Ramone) and Grammy Award winner Francis Buckley (Quincy Jones, Aerosmith, Alanis Morisette, Paula Abdul, LL Cool J, Black Flag). Additionally the winning artist(s) will receive vocal training throughout the sessions from SLS certified instructor Robert ‘RAab’ Stevenson (Kelly Rowland, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson, The Singing Office). The resulting recording will be professionally mixed and mastered, and provided to the winning artist to release as they see fit. Second and third prize winners will each receive a studio prize pack consisting of a number of studio and live performance microphones and studio monitors from Event, totalling over US$15,000 in value.

Zildjian’s Historical Background

Avedis Zildjian II

 Every Company has a story: Zildjian’s dates to 1623

Avedis Zildjian I (the first) was an Armenian alchemist in the city of Constantinople in the early seventeenth century. While attempting to create gold by combining base metals, he discovered an alloy of copper, tin, and traces of silver with unique sound qualities. In 1618, Avedis used his secret alloy to create cymbals of spectacular clarity and power. The sound of the instruments was so extraordinary that the Sultan invited Avedis to live at court (Topkapi Palace) to make cymbals for the Sultan’s elite Janissary Bands. As Avedis’ reputation grew, the Sultan gave him the name “Zildjian” in Armenian (Zilciyan in Turkish), a word meaning “son of cymbal maker.”

In 1623, Avedis was granted permission to leave the palace in order to start his own business in a suburb of Constantinople named Psamatia. That same business is now nearly four centuries old and has been passed down to Zildjian heirs for fifteen generations. Relocating to America in 1929, Avedis III moved the Zildjian factory to Quincy, MA and then to its current location in Norwell, MA for Zildjian’s 350th Anniversary. The business passed to Avedis’ son, Armand in 1977 and then to Armand’s daughter, Craigie, in 1999. Currently, Craigie and her sister Debbie continue the family tradition in what is recognized as the oldest family-owned business in America.

Currently touring on the heels of the release of its new album, Come Around Sundown, Kings of Leon is one of the most successful bands in the world. Originally formed in 1999, the band hails from Tennessee and features Nathan, brothers Caleb and Jared, and their cousin, Matthew. Kings of Leon has enjoyed great success over the course of its career with five album releases on RCA, record digital sales, rankings in the Top 10 in over 10 countries, as well as Grammy Award nominations.

Raised in the South, Nathan and his brothers spent their childhood traveling from one Pentecostal church to the next. Nathan and Caleb moved to Nashville to pursue music careers and Kings of Leon was formed, after younger brother Jared and cousin Matthew joined the band in 1999.

In 2002 the band signed with RCA Records and has since released five albums; Youth and Young Manhood (August 2003), Aha Shake Heartbreak (February 2005), Because of the Times (April 2007), Only by the Night (September 2008), and Come around Sundown (October 2010).

Chicago Honours the Legendary Buddy Guy with His Own Street!!!

Blues legend Buddy Guy received a very special gift, for his 75th birthday, celebrated on July 30. The Fender signature artist, was honoured by the city of Chicago, with a special proclamation from Mayor Rahm Emanuel and his very own street.

The 700-block of South Wabash street, outside Guy’s restaurant and his aptly named club Legends, has been renamed as Buddy Guy Way.

“They normally give this to you after you are gone,” said Guy, who turned 75 on July 30. “My mom used to tell me, ‘Son, give me my flowers when I can still smell them. I’m not going to smell them when they put them on top of that grave.’”

Despite a steady rain, a very touched Guy insisted on venturing outside with Alderman Bob Fioretti, who read the proclamation, to view the unveiling of the street sign.

Weekend Warriors focusses on just two things, playing great music and having fun.

There’s no better way to get back to playing music than joining Weekend Warriors. As a Weekend Warrior you’ll be playing with other musicians of a similar level and playing the music you love, from Daddy Cool to Snow Patrol.

What’s more Weekend Warriors is fun, the Weekend Warriors program takes away all the hassles of organising rehearsals and gigs, leaving you to get on with want you want to do… making great music.

Weekend Warriors is an adventure that begins with a jam and ends with a gig.

The Weekend Warrior program provides all the latest gear, the rehearsal space, a coach and even the other members of your band! After the jam you’ll rehearse one night a week for four weeks and then finish off with a gig in a local club for your friends, family and fellow Warriors. Again it’s all arranged, the Weekend Warrior program provides the staging, the sound, the lighting and even the roadies. All you have to do is show up, have fun and be a star!!

Have fun making music again!

Getting involved in Weekend Warriors is easy and all you need is a little time and a good attitude. It’s all about fun.  No-one will get upset if you play the wrong notes – and there are definitely no nuns with rulers.

Can’t read music? No problem. Can’t read guitar tab? No problem. All we ask is that you know one end of a guitar from the other, or drum kit, or keyboard, or microphone.
