For the last 20 years, Dave Weckl has maintained a reputation amongst his fans and peers as one of the very finest musicians on the contemporary music scene today.

Weckl was born in St. Louis, receiving his first drum set at age eight and developing his playing style by listening to drummers like Buddy Rich, as well as R&B grooves. After a couple of years in college, he became involved in the New York jazz scene, eventually joining a fusion group called Nitesprite, where he attracted the attention of Peter Erskine. It was Peter who recommended Dave for his first ‘big gig’ in town with a group called French Toast, forerunner to the Michel Camilo band, which has been recorded quite extensively over the years.

In 1985 Michael Brecker suggested that Chick Corea check out Dave for his new Elektric Band, he was forming. That was the beginning of a 7 year relationship with both the Elektric and Akoustic Bands, where 9 recordings and 3 videos were produced, including a Grammy for the initial Akoustic Band release. Zildjian’s Gen16 AE Cymbals won the prestigious “Best in Show” award at NAMM Fest 2011! While electronic drums and percussion have been around for years, the AE Cymbal is a completely new twist that uses established technology to create essentially a completely new instrument. “The Acoustic Electric Cymbal is capable of creating a wide range of sounds, from that of a classic Zildjian cymbal to some very non-traditional sounds,” explains Zildjian’s VP of New Business & Product Development, John Roderick. “For drummers, it will have an inspirational impact akin to what the acoustic electric guitar has done for guitarists.”

Unlike most existing electronic percussion systems, the AE Cymbal is not a sample trigger device. Instead, it’s an actual cymbal, and plays like one, but at reduced volume levels, utilizing a unique dual microphone and DSP engine to amplify and model the cymbal’s output.

“One of the most important things for us in creating the AE Cymbal was that it had to feel and play like a real cymbal,” says Paul Francis, Zildjian’s Director of R&D. “Most of what’s currently available for drummers are rubberized, cymbal-shaped trigger pads, and they typically lack the feel and responsiveness of a real cymbal. For us at Zildjian, we’ve always been about the real feel.”

At the NAMM show, seven music retail experts toured the Convention Center for three days to select the best and brightest offerings, and selected Gen16′s revolutionary Acoustic Electric (AE) Cymbals as one of the breakout hits of NAMM 2011. Even before the show’s official opening, Internet blogs and forums were buzzing with anticipation over Gen16’s innovative new products, fueling a steady stream of crowds around the Gen16 booth throughout every hour of the show’s four days.

Unlike MIDI trigger pads, Gen16′s AE Cymbals are real acoustic cymbals that sound and respond just like a traditional cymbal, but play at less than a quarter of the volume. A patented dual microphone system and sophisticated digital signal processing enables the AE Cymbal to create a range of natural cymbal sounds without the use of sampling or MIDI.

“The AE Cymbal represents a true paradigm shift for musicians,” says John Roderick, Zildjian”s VP of New Business and Product Development. “It’s an entirely new instrument, much like the Fender Rhodes was to the acoustic piano, or the electric bass to the upright bass, and we believe it will have a comparable influence on musicians and their music.” Look for the AE Cymbals in stores near you later this year.

The AE Cymbals are one of several innovative products introduced by Gen16 at NAMM. The Digital Vault library of high-quality samples of Zildjian’s most rare and sought-after cymbals was released earlier in 2010. Other Gen16 products announced that will soon be available included the AE Rack, a revolutionary new hardware system for acoustic and electric drums and percussion, the interactive Groove Player app for iPad and iPhone, and the new Gen16Grooves.com online store which will be live soon.

Zildjian CEO Craigie Zildjian summed it up. “The Zildjian company has been making cymbals since 1623, making us one of the world’s oldest family-owned businesses,” she says. “With Gen16, we’re making a bold and definitive statement for Zildjian in the 21st century.” 

As Francis Zildjian explains, the original concept for a low-volume acoustic cymbal was proposed by Korg.

“They came up with the basic perforation pattern and approached us to perfect the design. We did extensive testing to create a perforation pattern that would maintain the integrity of an actual cymbal. We also worked to develop the right alloy formula that could deliver the feel, sound and durability we needed, and could be manufactured in a wide range of sizes and shapes.”

Amplifying the cymbal was a challenge of a different magnitude. “We came up with a dual microphone system we liked, but there were other challenges,” says Product Specialist Chris Ryan. “One of the biggest was to determine how to best implement signal processing into the mix, as well as how to make the microphone work with most cymbal setups and hardware.”

The Gen16 team began a painstaking process of designing the pickup housing and refining the tone modeling and signal processing system that would ultimately become the AE Cymbal System. After many months of programming, the system was ready for the true “acid test.”

“Leon Chiappini, our master cymbal tester, and Paul Francis had to give their approvals of each of the sounds,” says Ryan.

“Leon has been at Zildjian since the early 1960s, and learned his craft under Avedis and Armand Zildjian. And Paul’s been our head of R&D for years and has designed and tested more than his share of cymbals. Both of them are pretty much capable of identifying any type of cymbal blindfolded. When Leon and Paul gave their approval, we knew we’d done it. Then we knew we’d created something really special.”
