Kleinmond’s new harbour to host the 2012 Big Blues Music Festival on 2 & 3 March

To some, it was the “Little Festival that Could.” But after the March 2011 festival, “little” is no longer a word one can associate with Kleinmond’s Big Blues Music Festival. In its first solo year as the Western Cape’s premiere blues music fest, the Big Blues Music Festival defied naysayers by mounting a near-flawless event with arguably the strongest line-up of blues artists ever to be assembled on one stage.

“Our focus remains on the provision of excellent genre-specific music, combined with a clean and safe festival environment, and outstanding local cuisine and wine. The festival is a unique event that promotes our beautiful coast – even more so for the 2012 event as it has found a new home in the spectacularly upgraded Kleinmond Harbour – I doubt there is any other festival that will bring you as close to the sea. Furthermore, the Harbour Road brand supports our festival philosophy and this new partnership will prove our commitment to putting on a one-of-a-kind festival of the highest quality that all stakeholders can be proud of “, says event organiser, Louise Fick.

The festival will once again offer value for money packages and offers to include accommodation, entry to the area’s major tourist attractions and a range of additional discounts. General festival facilities include a 1050 square metre marquee for shade, safe parking, a buddy-bus to get you safely home, a kiddies club, arts stalls and more.

The 20 artists featured on the line-up include music legends such as Vusi Mahlasela, Piet Botha and The Blues Broers (featuring Albert Frost). The festival certainly prides itself in offering stage time to up-and-coming young blues bands and will this year include acts such as the Hellfire Blues Club, Sixgun Gospel and Crimson House Blues – most of them voted in to the line-up by Facebook fans. The ladies play a predominant role with Charlie King, In The Deepend and Natasha Meister on stage amongst others.

Old favourites such as Fender endorsee Dan Patlansky, popular Boulevard Blues Band, and the ever evolving Gerald Clark are also among the performers. The full list of artists, with performance times, and festival ticket prices (range R150 to R250 per person) are available from the website www.bigblues.co.za.

Festival goers are guaranteed a fantastic time. But don’t take our word for it, hear what others had to say following the 2011 festival:

“You are raising the standards of SA festivals,” claims Andre Kriel of the Black Cat Bones, one of the showcase performers.

“Kleinmond is not necessarily a town you would expect to experience soul-wrenching, spine-tingling blues music, but for the weekend of the 4th and 5th of March it felt like the perfect place to be,” wrote Joseph Lawrence in his Getaway Magazine blog. “I can’t wait for the next … and in fact I won’t – I’m going to start stalking all of the aforementioned artists on Facebook right now!”

It’s this kind of enthusiasm that will ensure Kleinmond embraces its new role as the “blues capital” of South Africa.

Louise Fick.

Campus of Performing Arts (COPA) was founded in 2001 and is a contemporary music college with campuses in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Kwa-Zulu Natal. Our courses are taught by trained facilitators who are also music industry specialists and professional musicians, which gives our students one of the most rounded and intensive practical programmes currently available anywhere in the world.

COPA offers full-time courses in: Drums, Guitar, Vocals, Bass, Keyboard and Sound Technology (including Music Production/Sound Engineering or DJ) and Music Business. Some of these courses are also offered on a part-time basis. Students are not only trained in their chosen instrument, but also in modules such as Music Business and Stage Craft to ensure that they are well prepared for a successful career in the music industry. Each campus boasts state-of-the-art facilities with a recording studio, a technology centre, a performance venue and practice facilities for use by its students.

All courses offered by our unique institution are accredited locally and articulate using RPL into qualifications offered internationally. We are registered locally by the Department of Education as an FET college and a private HET institution. Full accreditation by the CATHSSeta also allows COPA to train previously disadvantaged individuals in Learnerships (as and when Government SETA Funding permits), with courses found on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Please note: COPA is provisionally registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training until 31 December 2014 as a private higher education institution under the Higher Education Act, 1997.

Albert’s Latest Album: Devils & Gods

Albert Frost: Blues icon, Rock god

If South Africa has such a thing as rock royalty, it’s Albert Frost.

Albert is an all-round master guitarist with a passion for music that reflects happiness over any audience and for lovers of all genres – he effects success into the albums of many artists and is loved by crowds all over the world.

Albert and the boys with Nelson Mandela

Albert Frost started playing the guitar in 1990, when he was only 13. He was voted the ”Best Blues guitarist in South Africa” by Stage Magazine. This fact, however, shouldn’t let you underestimate the man’s serious Rock abilities.

In 1994 he started playing alongside his father, the legendary Frank D. Frost, in the awesome blues band, the Blues Broers. Frosted Orange was created in 1996 with artist Simon Orange, who played keyboards and vocals for the Blues Broers.

Albert performed with Valiant Swart from 1999 to 2003 and recorded Blou Kombuis with Koos Kombuis in 2000. In 2004, he played with the Belgian band, Blues Lee at the internationally acclaimed music festival, Pukkelpop, in Belgium. Daniel Lohues, an international blues performer from Holland, collaborated with Albert at an electrifying Oppikoppi show during the same year.

Releasing his first solo album entitled “Catfish” in 2002 created a new spectrum, as he features original songs and Frost-versions of the classics from Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters, to name a few. Albert is a mood-man who can perform intimate solo shows, just as well as he can deliver his electrifying fusion of blues, rock ’n roll and funk with his Trio band.

Arno Carstens’ band, Nu Porn, was formed in 2003, when Albert joined forces with him and a Who’s Who of famous musicians. Besides Arno and Albert the band also featured Jerome Reynard (ex-drummer for Nine), Warren Leicher (Plum) and Brendan Jury (Trans-Sky/Ohm). The album “Another Universe” went gold and Arno won Best Rock Album Award at the SAMA Awards. That very month, they supported REM on their world tour in March 2005.

Isle of Wight Festival: Albert, Jerome Reynard (on vid-screen) and some of the guys from NuPorn

Albert Frost shared stages with South Africa’s finest: Vusi Mahlasela, Louis Mahlanga, Morris Goldberg, Nico Carstens, Ollie Viljoen, Theo Crous, Anton Goosen, Riku Latti, Gerald Clarke and the Springbok Nude Girls. True highlights in his career include performing with The Rolling Stones in Spain in 2007, playing a show with Oscar winner Tim Robbins in the Blues Room and being part of the REM tour in 2006; the presidential inauguration and celebration of the 10 years of democracy in 2004 to an audience of 70 000, as well as collaborating with double Grammy Award winning Malian legend, Ali Farka Toure for an exclusive function launch for priceless African manuscripts from the 14th century in Cape Town, hosted by Thabo Mbeki.

2008 saw the release of folkrock singer Myburgh’s debut album, Woestyn, an album that Albert produced. Myburgh and Albert were at school together in Somerset West. They had a band called The Fauves and were in later years the original founders of the band, Dorp.

In 2009, Albert played his first solo show at the Isle of Wight Festival where he did a collaboration with James Walsh from ‘Starsailor’. Alongside Arno Carstens, he shared the stage with Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and the Pixies. While supporting Simple Minds on they’re world tour in Germany, London and France, they were invited to play in Times Square.

He’s played 11 Grahamstown Festivals, 8 Oudtshoorn KKNK festivals, 6 years at Aardklop, did a 4th performance at Woodstock, Splashy Fen – and incredibly, 2009 year marked Albert’s 23rd Oppikoppi Festival performance.

The music could speak volumes more, but the man (Albert Frost) is a veritable living legend at and fondly dubbed “SA’s best blues guitarist” by way too many people to be denied a bit of hero worship” – Jess Mitrani – Levi’s Music Mag 2008

His first solo studio album, “Devils and Gods” was released by Seed and is available in stores now!

Playing Devils & Gods with Albert Frost by Evan Milton (10.01.2010)

Guitar-slinger Albert Frost has relocated back to the Cape from playing with Arno Carstens in Johannesburg and returns home with a new band, a new album – and plans for a reunion.

Albert Frost answers the ‘phone from his family’s Gansbaai holiday cottage with the air of a man who has explored widely in the world before finding himself. Actually, on the first call, he’s unable to answer… His wife and business manager, Lelanie, does the honours, hinting that one of South Africa’s most acclaimed electric- and blues-guitarists is caught up in fatherly duties. He phones back in minutes and it’s an older, wiser, more settled soul than the kid who was smuggled out of school by Cape Town’s legendary Blues Broers to record their first album and went on to raise hell touring with Arno Carstens, supporting REM, The Rolling Stones and Simple Minds and collaborating with artists as diverse as Ali Farka Toure, Louis Mahlanga, Tim Robbins, Springbok Nude Girls, Anton Goosen and Vusi Mahlasela.

The first point of call is The Gods, a new band he formed with singer Parri Luckhoff (Billygoat), bassist Schalk van der Merwe (Bed On Bricks) and drummer Francious Kruger (Springbok Nude Girls). “Parri and Schalk came up with the idea about a year ago,” says Albert. “They’re old school buddies and wanted to do something like Billygoat, which was a great band in its time – some old-school rock. They approached me, and obviously I said, ‘Ja’. I’ve always wanted to do something with Francious – his style is perfect for this.”

Albert Frost wins Doritos Be Heard Competition (05.01.2010)

South African guitarist, Albert Frost, has won the South African leg of the Doritos Be Heard competition. Frost wins the grand prize of R200 000.

Says Frost about winning the competition, “This proves that there’s definitely a God up there and He’s eating Doritos”. The winning song, “Television”, was taken from Frost’s debut studio recorded EP, “Devils & Gods”, which was released earlier this year.

The Doritos Be Heard competition is an international competition with legs in Venezuela, Spain, South Africa and Mexico. Musicians from each country are given the opportunity to upload performance clips to the website. The ten most popular clips then progress into the final heat of the competition where fans are able to vote for their favourite clips. The competition ran for the duration of October and November and it was decided, due to most amount of votes, that Albert Frost had won the South African leg and along with it R200 000.

Music is Universal… and so is The Kalahari Connection

Throughout the ages, musical innovation and evolution is frequently the result of an ongoing fusion of diverse musical elements.

The Kalahari is home to the Khoisan and Bushmen, widely considered to be the first people. Humanity spread globally from the Kalahari, our forebears taking the first music with them, to all parts of the world.

Kalahari Connection is a global collective of musicians, from numerous cultures and nationalities, all children of the Kalahari, coming home to Africa and the cradle of humankind. Each carries, with them, some of the infinite new sounds and flavours, derived from the Kalahari and the first people, fusing these into new music, that celebrates the rich human variety.

Kalahari Connection brings together elements of African, Indian, Chinese, Jazz, Rock and Classical Music on instruments such as Tabla, Chinese Bamboo Flute, Concert Flute, African Bows, Flutes, Percussion and Marimba, 12-string Bass, Drums, African and Latin Percussion. Each band member shares a deep and long standing connection with the music scene, in South Africa and globally, a fact that speaks for itself.

Alistair Andrews on Bass

The group made its debut on 10 July 2011, at the Jazz and World Music Masala Concert, and performed for a select audience of musicians and music fans at Swingers Jazz Club, in Wetton, Cape Town.

Latest News on Joint State

This rock band has real talent, attitude and energy, with live performances and songs that leave a lasting impression on fans and listeners alike. Joint State was born in 2009 after three established musicians from Cape Town joined forces to share their influences and talents. Brothers Chris and Martin Munro joined up with friend Stephan Lenhoff to form a musical partnership of vocals, guitar, drums and bass.

The trio immediately hit it off and started refining their sound described as classic rock with a modern edge. Their influences range from The Doors and The Rolling Stones to Pearl Jam and Nirvana. They have, however, created a sound which is unique and striking. The band’s lyrics address issues ranging from politics, love and life, all real experiences from the soul. Great original compositions and arrangements and live performances, fuelled with attitude and charisma, have seen the band grow so popular, that they now also have an endorsement deal with Paul Bothner Music

The band has featured on radio stations such as MFM, KFM, Radio Algoa, Highveld FM and numerous online radio stations around the world.

Using the top prize they won at a local Battle of the Bands, Joint State recorded their EP entitled “The Relief” over a period of 2 weeks at Franschhoek Studios. The band decided to use the EP solely as a promo tool and never released it commercially, opting instead to offer it gratis at gigs, as a free download online and distributing it in press packs to spread the word.

The band hooked up with well known tour promoter Dirk Uys and other booking agents to help them organize tours and gigs and have completed two very successful east coast tours.

Also using the internet as a medium and especially social media, they constantly keep in touch with their fans and provide updates on the latest developments. The band has two major industry relationships in play: a deal with Exile Records and Paul Bothner Music’s sponsorship. The band kicked off 2011 by heading to the studio to record their new album and a music video launch. They’ve also taken the stage at many festival appearances, around the country.

Roxy Blu: Weekend Warriors Success!!

For years Craig Broadfoot loved watching drummers play and was keen to give it a bash! He says: ”It all really started when I was spotted on M-Net, playing the drums on a reality show. Then I joined Weekend Warriors, through Paul Bothner Music, just for the fun of it and the jol…”

Bassist, Keith Conroy, is the latest addition to Roxy Blu, having joined at the beginning of 2011. He’s self taught, with influences ranging from Soundgarden, Metallica, Pearl Jam and Nickelback.

Mark Wiercx, an acoustic and electric guitar-player, has a foundation in classical training. He’s developed a playing style which includes the use of alternate tunings and with his co-guitarist, Neil Berry, on electric and slide guitar, delivers a strong, bluesy tonality.

Mark has many guitars and also runs a sanctuary for abused guitars. He uses a Boss ME-50 effects unit and two guitars tuned to open tunings – open G and open E. These are for slide guitar, on some blues numbers. Mark uses an acoustic and an electric for playing lead through a volume pedal and an Electroharmonix Big Muff. They focus on playing music that explores different guitars and has lots of depth with multiple parts.

On lead vocals, acoustic guitar, 12-string guitar, electric guitar and percussion, Don Roos brings his talent all the way, from when he was in his early teens, told by a music teacher that he should get into singing. Just like many other great talents, he sang in a church choir, for a while…

Don said: “My preference is toward Rock Ballads but I’ve really learned to appreciate Blues, since discovering the likes of Dan Patlansky, Albert Frost (featured on this website), Boulevard Blues and many other locals, appearing at the many Blues Festivals that now abound around Cape Town.”

Their set includes the songs: ”Before You Accuse Me”, by Eric Clapton, the Guns and Roses version of “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” and “Honky Tonk Woman”, by the Rolling Stones.

Check out more details on these Bluesmen on their Roxy Blu Band facebook site.

The Avedis Zildjian Company is proud to announce that iconic Rock drummer, Jason Bittner of Shadows Fall, has joined its family of artists. Regarded as one of the best Metal drummers of his generation, Bittner is widely recognized for his double bass skills, ability to play complex patterns at high speeds, and extensive knowledge of jazz and Latin drumming styles. He is often credited with “bringing the groove back to Metal drumming.” An accomplished teacher and author, Bittner will headline Zildjian’s U.S. clinic tour in May 2011. Stay tuned to Zildjian.com for more info on that to come…

“I’ve been attracted to Zildjian cymbal sounds for years,” said Bittner. “I bought my first 18″ A Zildjian Crash Ride when I was only 11 years old. I feel that I’m coming home with my new relationship with Zildjian, and I look forward to spending the next decade and beyond with them.”

Commenting on the upcoming clinic tour, Bittner said, “The clinic tour will feature play alongs, free-form playing, educational content, and fun. I’m hoping to have a few Shadows Fall tracks from my new record to share with fans on the tour. Zildjian cymbals are featured in these new recordings. They’ve already become a part of my sound. It’s really been a seamless transition for me.”

“We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome Jason to the Zildjian Family. He’s the complete package: a phenomenal player and student of the instrument, a great educator and role model for younger players, and a highly respected artist among his peers and the drumming community overall. We’re very excited about his future with Zildjian, and we’re looking forward to hitting the road in May for Jason’s first clinic tour as a Zildjian artist,” said John DeChristopher, VP Artist Relations & Event Marketing Worldwide.

A native of Albany, New York, Bittner attended the Berklee College of Music and played with Stigmata, one of the biggest hardcore bands on the New York scene, for seven years. In the fall of 2001, Bittner joined Shadows Fall. For the past 10 years, he has toured extensively with the band and released The Art of Balance; The War Within (debuted #38 on Billboard and received a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance); Fallout From the War; Threads of Life (Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance); and Retribution, one of the band’s most powerful albums to date that debuted in Billboard’s Top 40.

Bittner has been nominated for numerous awards including the 2004 Modern Drummer Reader’s Poll for #1 Up and Coming Drummer; the 2005 Modern Drummer Reader’s Poll for #1 Best Recorded Performance for the Shadows Fall album The War Within and #1 Metal drummer; and for the second consecutive year, the 2006 Modern Drummer Reader’s Poll for #1 Metal drummer. Bittner’s book, Drumming Out of The Shadows, which was co-authored by Joe Bergamini, received the #2 award in the DRUM! Magazine Reader’s Poll for Best Educational Book.

Bittner’s Zildjian cymbal set up includes:

Four years since inception, Obsessie Met Als, is imbedded in the core of Afrikaans Modern Rock. The grind of their delivery has rewarded them with prominent force, in the face of stardom, manifest in press and public perception.

Opening for The Van Coke Kartel, on the latter’s Waaksaam en Wakker album release tour, playing with power performers like Damn Right! and aKing and producing a music video for “Net Virri Grap”, all this has built up their fanbase and turned them into rock icons. Featured on MK 324 and with highlights like these, their popularity and ability gained them a spot on Radio KC 107.7 FM, presenting a show on Monday nights from 8 till 9.

This LMG Magazine, official “Band to Watch”, has just released their album: Splinter Nuwe Moeilikheid… Don’t miss this band! Check out the gig guide below and give their new album a listen. It’ll be worthwhile…

Paul Bothner Music: What gear are all of you using?

Vollie: Fender guitar, Ibanez bass, Marshall & Ashdown amps, Gretch drumset, Sabian cymbals.

PBM: Are there any new directions in your music that your fans would notice and appreciate?

Vollie: Yes, the new material we are working on, is still nice and hard but we’re focussing on a get up and dance vibe, with a good party in mind.

PBM: Where did you get the title of your new album from and what does it connect with?

Vollie: The meaning of the title, is to show that the album is new and unique and to show our attitude: wanting to cause a bit of a stir, a little bit of trouble on the music scene.

PBM: Regarding the radio show you guys were connected with: what kind of music were you plugging?

Vollie: We mostly concentrated on the local rock music because it’s important to support everyone out there. We played some of our favourites such as Ashtray Electric, Jack Parrow (who was live in studio with us), Taxi Violence, Van Coke Cartel and our own music as well.

PBM: How did you go about the production for your music video? Who was involved?

Vollie: Kyle Lewis, who directed music videos for Locnville, Flash Republic, Goodluck, Jamali and Will Mono, agreed to help us out by doing our latest video. We had his crew of 20 people, 5 days of shooting, Neels van Jaarsveld and Lene Kruger as actors and… an explosion! Everyone worked hard to create the short-film inspired music video.

PBM: What are your pet hates and favourite things about playing?

Vollie: Well, it really gets us nervous and impatient when you think that you’re going to play, and suddenly you have to sound-check again… But at the end of the day, the free booze, party and the audience’s positive reactions towards our music is what makes it all worthwhile. When we’re on stage, 3 best friends, that’s when we enjoy life the most.

PBM: What’s your album about in a nutshell?

Vollie: Mystery, hatred, curiosity, good times and rock ‘n roll…

PBM: Are there any tracks which are favourites and what can you tell your fans about those songs, so they’ll understand your message better?

Vollie: The song that gets our audience jumping and jamming, is definitely “Oggend Visie”. The crowd loves singing with us on this song. Well, the song is actually about telling people who insulted you, to get real.

The band is working on a collaboration, this year, with someone whose identity will be revealed shortly…
