Forever Young Music Competition 2014

11am and 5pm every Saturday from 30th August 2014 until early November 2014

Supporting NONCEBA, a family centre based in Khayelitsha

Conceived by Frank Resnik, this event is a unique ‘Over Forties’ amateur music competition and is a project aimed at showcasing the more mature amateur musician who does not necessarily have the opportunity to play live but has a passion for music and would like a musical challenge.

Most people, at some stage of their youth, learn to play a musical instrument. Many of them become very competent musicians but once they start working and ‘life catches up with them’, their instrument goes into the cupboard and stays there, not forgotten, but also not played.

Once we get into our 40’s and beyond, the urgency of building a career has often diminished and even though we would like to start playing music again, a little incentive is what is sometimes needed to get one to open the cupboard door and start practicing again.

Having put feelers out and receiving extremely positive feedback, and having hosted a few amateur music evenings at Marika’s Restaurant, it became apparent that there is a wealth of talent sitting at home, never being heard by anyone other than a few friends and family. With the staging of Forever young Music Competition 2012 at Ferryman’s Tavern in 2012 and 2013, we changed that. The competition played to full houses throughout its run and ended with a charity awards dinner.

This year we have changed the venue to Marika’s Restaurant in Gardens. Marika’s is very easily accessible, with the My City busses running in close proximity, and free on-street parking in the area.

Forever Young Music Competition 2014 will run between 11am and 5pm every Saturday from 30th August 2014 until early November 2014.

Once again we will take this opportunity to give something back, by supporting NONCEBA, a family centre based in Khayelitsha. ( We do this by asking audiences and participants to donate unwanted clothes/blankets etc and by giving them  a portion of the ticket price to the charity awards dinner held at the end of the competition, as well as R10 from each entrance fee to the venue charged during the competition.

The format of the competition for 2014 is outlined below.

  • Participants must be 40 years or older (must have turned 40 on or before 30th August 2014)
  • In the interest of fairness, participants may not be professional musicians and may not have received their main source of income making music, or from other music related services rendered to the music industry, within the past five years. (Music teachers, Sound engineers, professional Composers and Songwriters etc do not qualify). Semi-pro musicians who have in the past five years or are currently working more than four times a month on a regular basis also do not qualify.
  • A R135 registration fee per person will be levied. This fee entitles registered contestants free access to the venue on competition nights. Each contestant will also receive a Photo ID, which must be presented at the door on entry
  • Entry to the venue will cost R95 for non-contestants, of which R10 will be donated to NONCEBA and for which they will receive an R85 Marika’s voucher. This voucher will entitle the audience member to an R85 discount off their food/drinks bill on departure. Vouchers are date specific and must be redeemed on the Day. Vouchers may not be exchanged for cash and no cash change or refunds will be given
  • Prizes include: * an opportunity to perform at a venue booked by MS Events* an eight hour recording session at BENNO Recording Studio which will end in the contestant receiving a ‘demo’ disc of the music recorded on the day * musical instruments and accessories * Paul Bothner Music vouchers * restaurant vouchers * SHURE microphones and headphones * spot prizes of beer/wine/soft drinks and a host of other prizes for participants and audiences
  • Registration is also open to past entrants, other than the top three scoring previous Forever Young Music Competition contestants
  • This year’s venue for Forever Young Music Competition 2014 will be Marika’s Restaurant in Gardens
  • Auditions begin on Saturday 30th August 2014, followed in October by quarter-and semi-finals and culminating in a final and our charity awards dinner in early November 2014.

Rockville 2069 is a love story set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world. Set in the year 2069, this sci-fi rock opera revolves around a group of music-lovers, environmentalists, thinkers and musicians who gather to commemorate the anniversary of the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival that took place 100 years before. After a global cataclysm, leaving few survivors, the planet is reduced to a wasteland – except for a hub of existence called Rockville.

The survivors begin to make a simple life for themselves, living by the values that had brought them together to celebrate the anniversary of Woodstock. Outsiders desperately want control of Rockville and attempt to oust its inhabitants into oblivion.

COPA’s Open Day!

Date for all branches except KZN :

Saturday 30 August 2014

Cape Town: 12pm to 4pm

Johannesburg: 12pm to 3pm

Pretoria: 11am to 3pm

NB: KZN ‘s event is on the 5th of September from 12pm to 3pm

All the COPA branches listed below

Paul Bothner Music’s friends from COPA are running an Open Day. COPA is a great institution for developing your potential as a musician and as a corporate level worker in the music industry.

The Open Day includes

- a breakdown on full-time and part-time courses

- drumming demonstrations and live performances by COPA students

- one-on-one chats with Student Representative Council members, on life as a COPA student, as well as 2015 enrollments and auditions.

COPA Academy

COPA Academy, running as a part-time training facility, will, for the first time in South Africa, make a world-class product available to all aspiring musicians, producers, sound engineers, and DJ’s through a network of approved COPA Academy centres, throughout South Africa. COPA Academy is a sister company of Campus of Performing Arts. Its part-time course material is based on the full-time qualifications offered by Campus of Performing Arts. The course material is based on the nationally registered and CATHSSETA accredited programmes.

DJ Training

- COPA has partnered with DJ Ian Credible, to teach levels 2, 3 and 4 (basic to advanced). He’s training local DJ’s, on a part-time basis, in communities in the Western Cape, and via COPA Cape Town.

Click here to watch DJ Ian Credible.

- DJ’s will start by learning how to MASTER the DJ DECKS, and elevate to the level where they’ll use ABLETON LIVE over the various 12 week programmes.

- Lessons are broken into 90 minute sessions, once per week, starting at R2000 for COPA’s BASIC COURSE (a once-off opportunity), excluding the DJ part-time book, which costs R200.

- The subsequent courses increase in price, up to R5000. The most advanced course, HIGHER Education level – Stadium DJ, has now evolved to ARTIST level because of the compositional work that occurs over the 12 lessons.

- All classes can be administered on a one-on-one level, but group classes are preferred, with no more than 5 learners per group.

- There are also 2 Full-Time DJ course options. These are offered on COPA’s Higher Education Programme. With these, students can achieve a Higher Certificate, as well as a Diploma in Music Production, focusing on DJ-ing. These will be running in COPA Cape Town from 2015 onward, starting with the Higher Certificate.
